My name is Shirley Kasser Creech and I approve this message. Well, at least one of me does, anyway. Maybe. Fire. Sharp things. Squirrel!
Shirley you're not serious? No, I'm not, but do stop calling me Shirley.
I used to fly for a sky diving club and the plane, like most jump planes in small clubs was old and tired and did not inspire loads of confidence. On one particular flight about a week after a Beech 18 crashed with a load of jumpers we were climbing to jump altitude and I was leaning the mixture for a little more power (field elevation was at 4,000' already). I leaned it just a bit too far causing the engine to run a bit rough for a second or so. The jumpers were obviously sensitized by the press coverage as I found my self dealing with a sudden trim change and then noted I was now alone in the aircraft. At least we were circling the drop zone so they were not landing in the local wal-mart parking lot.
Sky divers are an odd bunch who make cave divers look pretty normal.
Is it ever really finished?![]()
I've never built a plane, but have lots of experience building & restoring wooden boats. The concept of "finished" seems to refer to a very brief point in time; between completion to the point where it can be used for its intended purpose, and the onset of never-ending maintenence, repair, and periodic restoration. I bet planes are the same, if not more so!
I'm an A&P/IA and work at a place that manufacturers Crop Dusters, so I have readily available everything any Home Builder could dream of, and I can't bring myself to build an airplane. I've got two airplanes, an 83 Maule that I have recovered, new interior, engine etc. and a 46 Cessna C-140 that I stalled out half way through it's restoration, it's flyable, I just quit on it.
You start building an airplane, your going to quit cave diving, unless maybe your retired and have one heck of an income. If you want to fly, buy an airplane.
Building an airplane to fly is like building your own re-breather. (an opinion of course)
