    Default Exercise and diving

I love to train in the gym 5 days weekly with weights and cardio. Now that summer is here, I also like to go diving 3-4 days weekly, but hate having to skip the gym on diving days. Anyone know the current recommendations for exercises before or after diving. Would love to be able to do both on the same days. Thanks for your input.

Exercise after diving should be avoided, as it can bring on a late DCS hit. Generally, anything post-dive that alters your normal circulation is not a good idea. Decompression models assume normal circulation post-dive and don't account for, say, an elevated heart rate. If you know you will have some necessary exertion after a dive, like a tough climb out of a sinkhole or a long hike back to the car, dive a very conservative profile.

I can't speak to pre-dive exertion, though I usually think it best to save what feeble strength my frail body has for the dive itself.

I don't do any excercise on dive days, before or after. Which sucks, cause you don't really get much of a workout during cave diving.

This article shows that predive exercise may be beneficial

work outs before diving can lead to muscle cramps, dehydration and having a swore spot show up after the dive..which may be from the gym or might be dcs related.

Post work outs as stated can bring on delayed dcs.

I feel your pain, I train for triathlons and am in the military so I have to constantly work out and dive. The general rule of thumb after a deco dive as per the dive school policy is 12 hours.

I've never looked into it, but I'd bet that even if you don't get a DCS hit by exercising after a dive, you'd be increasing the number of silent bubbles and doing some damage to your body, even though there may be no symptoms.

I generally work out/jog before diving..usually by a couple hours, never after.

You definitely don't want to exercise after diving. I've heard controversial reports on exercise before diving. Best thing to do is space out the diving and exercise with as large a gap as you can between the two.
