Tom, Dick, and Harry were going to dive Madison Blue. Tom had experience there but the cave was new to Dick and Harry. Tom had also never dove with Dick and Harry. He showed them a map of the system planning a dive to the Godzilla room. He would put in the jump line to the godzilla line which in the end resembles a question mark. He would put in a jump from the end of the question mark to the shaft of the question mark and we would make a small circle through the Godzilla room pull the second line and exit. Tom leads, Dick follows and Harry follows Dick. Every thing starts out smoothly. Due to the makeup of this cave with low areas and curves Harry cannot see Tom some of the time.The first jump is make without incident as is the second. Harry sees the second jump already in place as he gets there.Harry is following the line and sees Dick off to the right and up and doesn't see a line on either side of him. Harrry flashes Dick because he see no line. Dick looks back and then proceeds into a hole about 4x4 feet. Harry moves closer to where Dick disapeared into a cloud of silt and sees the line on the left wall. Harry OK's the line and preceds into the silt. After a few feet the vis gets normal again and Harry sees Dick gesturing "Where is Tom?" Harry puts his light against his chest and Dick does the same. No sign of Tom. Dick proceed a little father an still sees no sign of Tom. Harry gives Dick the thumb. In a few feet the silt is still there. Harry OK's the line, expecting to come to a dead end, Which he does. Harry gets out his safety reel and attaches it to the line and proceeds to attempt an exit. Firt attempt runs into a blind corner. second attempt the vis starts to get better and Harry sees a line on the floor, wraps his line around it, and proceeds back to get Dick. When they get back to the line they make a left and start to follow the line, praying it is the one they came in on.There are arrows pointing in the direction they headed. But the second jump spool is not there, causing harry much concern. Harry pulls out his slate and asks Dick if he saw the second jump reel and he says no. Harry is very worried about leaving Tom in the cave, but knows Tom knows the cave and exits hoping to find Tom on the way out. Harry and Dick get back to the deco bottles just inside the rabbit hole, looks out through the hole and sees Tom coming in with a stage bottle. OKs all around. What did we do wrong? Lots of things. 1 None of us put cookies on the line at the jumps. 2 Tom apparently got out of sight the guy behind him.(Dick) 3. Dick took his eyes off the line and made a visual jump. 4. Harry follow Dick across the visual jump without running a jump line. Tom had dropped into the Godzilla room expecting the other two to follow him. He saw Harry flashing his light at Dick, waited a few seconds and came back finding us gone. Tom is an instructor and has seen people do some stupid things. He thought we had hit thirds, flashed him and left. He made two circles through the godzilla room and couldn't find us, so he exited expecting us to be back at the deco bottles. When we were not there he went to his vehicle got more air and was coming to get us. We were all very happy to see each other. Complacency can kill you. We all watch the line better now, and use our cookies. Accidents usually have more than one error. Our cave instructor also suggested that we always put the least experienced diver in the lead. He will not go where he is not comfortable as quick as he will follow someone whom he trusts.
