Jackson Blue Spring Workshop

The Jackson County Planning Commission has scheduled a workshop this Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Jackson County Administration Building where the Board of County Commission meets across from the Southeast corner of the Jackson County Courthouse in Marianna. The purpose of the meeting is to address the Jackson Blue Spring Basin moratorium on subdivision development that expires August 14. The Planning Commission is considering several measures encompassed in the draft document attached to this email. I have also attached, for your information, the document sent to Florida Department of Community Affairs by Wakulla County that addresses springs protection in their Comprehensive Plan and a Letter to the Editor that appeared in this Sundays Jackson County Floridan.
Following the workshop at 1:00 p.m. the Planning Commission will hold their regularly scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the same room. The public is encouraged and invited to attend. Hope this email notice is helpful. Please pass this email notice on to other folks that might be interested. Chad

Hopefully they extend the moratorium.

If they don't then it would only put them on par with all the other counties trying to destroy the one natrual resource that ALL residents of Florida need... clean water.

Hopefully enough people will show up to voice concern. I wish it was on a Friday night or something so I could drive up there to be present.

I attended the last workshop, and I can tell you it was the best-organized group of conservationists I've ever seen. There were representatives from just about every government entity even remotely related to the preservation of natural resources.

There were also a number of citizens from the region (many retired) that obviously have the desire and energy to devote many, many hours of their time to see that the Blue Spring Basin is protected.

I have a great deal of confidence in this effort.

Just curious-
Has anyone done an impact study if they deveopled the site for cave divers and the 'potential' income generated not only from vistors, their potential tax dollars and other potential revenue? Such as reworking the basin to better support vistors, kayaks and local swimmers?

The Blue Hole in New Mexico did nothing with their spring site until an investment study was done and now the city is spending millions along with the federal governement. Plus, there is long term rumor that they might reopen the cave to quified divers.
