He's definitely not in the cave.

Wasn’t there a fatality in the search effort?

Not in any of the official searches. Larry Higginbotham died in the cave. Some speculated he might have been diving there because the family had a $30,000 reward for the recovery.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the family do away with the award offer after several months of searching?

IIRC, it was because of the fatality. They didn't want to be responsible for any more accidents.

just to be clear, i remember when this first happened- is it believed that the diver actually got up, left his dog at home, drove to vortex, parked his truck, and vanished without a trace after all these years? No further contact with any friends or family? or is the body, where ever it is in the cave, simply not recoverable?

Yeah, in much private communication I had with the father after the fatality that happened there, with the thought the victim was searching for the body for reward money.

We may never know for sure what happened, but if someone found remains under a shifting pile of sand I wouldn't doubt it. I had one dive there that made me very cautious. A mound of sand shifted and had a sandvalanche, which wedge me. I dug, but every handful, was filled by more. Eventually I dug enough of a trench to get out. The joke has always this is a manmade cave cave, because of the dredging efforts to move the sand.
