I am interested. I am newly full cave trained(August) and have a few dives aside from training in. Is there anything else I need? Who can I contact?

Default NSS-CDS Standards for Recovery Diver

Here are the standards that Ken Hill forwarded to us answering all of the questions that have been asked thus far. Note that the class fee will be split eqaully between the IUCRR nad the NSS-CDS, and the fee will be waived for any student who is currently a law enforcement officer.

3.6 RECOVERY DIVER: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND STANDARDS

    3.6.1 PURPOSE

The Recovery Diver Program is a two-part program:

    A. Management-oriented program designed to introduce cave divers to the fundamentals of conducting, investigating and managing cave-diving related fatalities and recovery.

    B. Procedures, techniques and equipment required for the extraction or rescue of a diver(s) lost in a cave and to educate divers in the responsibilities and teamwork involved at the scene of a diving fatality or incident. Participants receive information on recovery team organization, deployment to an accident scene, interaction with the jurisdictional law enforcement agency and management and techniques of the recovery operation.

    3.6.2 PROGRAM DURATION

    A. Classroom of approximately six (6) hours.

    B. In-water training of approximately two (2) hours.

    3.6.3 PREREQUISITES

    A. NSS-CDS Cave Diver level of training or equivalent.

    B. One hundred (100) logged non-training dives after completion of Cave Diver.

    3.6.4 CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS

Lecture and discussion as described in section 3.6.1.

    3.6.5 REQUIRED TEXT

Check with Course Instructor for latest course materials.

3.6.6 LAND/OPEN WATER DRILLS OR PRACTICE

    A. Land Drills:

    1. Review of tow harness procedures for victims.

    2. Review of tow procedures of equipment.

    3. Review lost line procedures.

    4. Review lost buddy procedures.

    5. Review towing procedures of/with DPV (if applicable).

    B. In-Water Drills:

    1. Tow harness applications.

    2. Extrication techniques.

    3. DPV use for extrication (if applicable).

    4. Equipment recovery.

    3.6.7 CAVE DIVES AND SKILLS

A recovery simulation dive is required. Completion of this level is left to the discretion of the instructor in determining the skill, ability and comfort level of the diver.

    3.6.8 INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS

    A. To conduct the NSS-CDS Recovery Diver Program, the Program Instructor shall be:

    1. “Active Status” NSS-CDS Cave Diver Instructor for at least one (1) year with a background in law enforcement or fire department scuba operations and their enforcement. The NSS-CDS Board of Directors and the NSS-CDS Training Committee Chairman may also consider other special experience or circumstance when considering approval.

    B. Approval of Training Committee Chairman and Training Committee based on approved Standards and Procedures requirements.

    C. Please refer to Section 4.6 of the NSS-CDS Standards and Procedures Manual for general procedures and requirements regarding NSS-CDS Specialty Instructor ratings.

    D. In order to be approved as a Recovery Diver Instructor the NSS-CDS Board of Directors and the NSS-CDS Training Committee Chairman shall be in agreement with the applicant’s instructor application request.

Thanks Kelly, DeWayne for coordinating the information for the coming CDS workshop. The IUCRR will provide other opportunities for the Recovery class, most likely at the NACD's fall workshop. /Ken
