Emergency Water Supply in Cambria is Now Running
CAMBRIA, Calif. -
The Cambria Community Services District’s Emergency Water Supply (EWS) facility started water production Tuesday afternoon. This comes after two months of commissioning and testing.
The water will be injected into the San Simeon Aquifer to recharge the wells that deliver most of Cambria’s drinking water.
CCSD General manager Jerry Gruber, said “Cambrian’s and the community of Cambria have been deliberating, discussing, and arguing over a supplemental source of water, and a year ago this month The CCSD board of directors decided to move forward with an emergency water supply.”
The community supported funding this project through prop 218. Gruber said it represents a cumulative effort from the county, and even at the federal level for allowing the community to get the project done in a short amount of time.
It’s going pump 300 acre-feet of water a year. Gruber said, “Its not going to provide the community with all its drinking water. It was designed to get us through the very difficult and challenging drought periods.” He added, “It’s going to enhance the environment. This project is going to take 100 gallons a minute that’s 14,400 gallons a day.”
“We’re going to put it into the creek for environmental enhancement so when the creeks are running short on water, It’ll enhance the habitat and allow us to be less dependent on our well fields,” Gruber said.
Ron Swierk, a 16-year Cambria resident, said “We’re glad that it’s in operation, not only is it something that’s keeping us from running out of water but it’s something we should have in case of an emergency that there will be a supply of water.”
The 50 gallons of water per-person per-day rule doesn’t change, but the next item up for discussion by the board is whether people in Cambria can use potable water outdoors.
Cambria remains in a stage three drought.
