    Default Eel in peacock

Saw a nice, fat, 2.5 ft long eel cruising up the peanut tunnel this weekend. Are these guys pretty common?

Not very common. There is one that I've seen once and awhile in the cavern area of P1 and another near Olsen in a side tunnel.

Yaaaaa.......I saw that the first time last Peacock trip! Scared me a bit 'cause it was 'different'. Is it a fish? Is it a snake? Naw....just an eel.

If you want to see LOTS of eels, make a cavern dive at Vortex Spring.

My wife and I made the swim back to the grate in November 1991. There were so many eels in there that the floor looked like it was moving, and most of them were 4' - 5' long.

A few years ago me and a buddy dove Morrison Spring. It was like a scene out of an Indiana Jones movie. Wall to wall Eels.
They were harmless enough and seemed pretty amused with our lights. They would swim right up and stare me in the eyes. Maybe they saw their own reflection in the glass. I read that they swim to and from the Gulf to spawn. I wonder if they know any secret passages through the aquifer. You would have to be skinny, slippery, and unhindered by deco limits to make the trip yourself. In my case two out of three ain't bad.

I did a solo dive in Morrison Spring that same afternoon because my wife was still chilled from making 2 dives at Vortex Spring. I did see plenty of eels in MS, but not near as many as in VS. My son-in-law just got Cavern certified, so we may make a trip to VS in the near future.

Jason, if you think the eels are interesting, you might like some of the pictures I have taken of them. They are in the pictures section here on the CDF. Just thought you might like to know. -Alan
