DOT requires all DOT stamped storage cylinders to be tested every 5 years. There is a test that can be done that will allow this to be extended out in time, but I do not remember the interval. If the cylinder is made under the ASME rules, then it is not required to be tested, unless the rule it is certified under requires testing. There are hydrotesting services that test the big submarine cylinders using stress gauges rather than a water bath, it is interesting to watch. There are stress gauges attached around the cylinders in rows that are about a foot or less apart, the cylinder is filled and pressurized, and the stresses are recorded on a computer. It is not cheap.

Being that a Hydro is hydraulic and I don't think compressible gasses are involved, your only dealing with the elasticity of the metal, It shouldn't be that big a deal even if a vessel ruptured.
I have never seen a Hydro go boom and I assume it is nothing like a Blevie sp? of Propane but it does still release a lot of energy in a very short time. I'd rather not be there thanks. my healthy respect of high pressure gas is well ingrained
High pressure gas, yes. There is an incredible amount of energy there, but fluids being incompressible you should very easily be able to hand pump a pretty large cylinder to high pressures with just a hand pump. Very high pressures, yes, lots of energy, no.
The 2265psi cylinders are "K" size, or approx 250 cu ft at rated pressure. (9" D x 51"H)
The 3500psi cylinders are "2HP" , or approx 365 cu ft. (9" D x 51" H)
All cylinders are out of hydro. I believe DOT says that hydros for fixed cylinders are good for ten years.
