Default Vertical gear lost at NFSA workshop

I meant to post this a while ago but forgot too. Maybe there is still hope.

I brought a TON of vertical gear to the workshop and made it home with everything except for the half round mallion from my own personal climbing harness.

It is a zircal aluminum model and looks like this:

If you somehow ended up with it please drop me a PM. I need to use my harness before I get to TAG and I'd rather not spend the $24 plus shipping to get a new one if someone has it and simply didn't know who's it was.

    Thanks, Obi

Did you check with the rangers? If that doesn't work, maybe a metal detector.

Oh no! You can climb and rappel with borrowed gear from someone on the same trip(I've got some funny stories), but it's hard to get by without a mallion. Bummer, dude.

Maybe there is an upside to this, you should look into the carabiner/locking-gate style of harness mallion. Like this:

For $8 more you get something more convenient and less likely to break. I used to use up one of the ones you lost every year there for a while. It wasn't until I was on an expedition in Spain, got the mallion jammed up and had to use a screwdriver and hammer to snap the metal to get it off my harness (and me)that I finally decided to buy the carabiner type. I've had that one since 2006 without problems.

Best of luck in finding it, but you should consider an upgrade if you have to replace it.

Speaking of Vertical Gear. I had an interesting conversation with someone about my old harness. I let him use my climbing system and in the bag was the harness I used to fit in. Anyway he took it all to a push and was told the Harness was Expired?????? I never heard of such a thing? Is there really an expiration date on a rappelling harness?

Many manufacturers will recommend retirement of soft goods after a period of time from date of manufacture, often ten years.

Thats why I always want to know the DOM of the soft goods I buy. I have seen stuff for sale as new that has been on the shelf for 10 years.

I'm sure in part that is to reduce liability, but there is also degredation and weakening that will occour to nylon and similar fibers simply through exposure to atmosphere.

I'm guessing it must have looked pretty questionable for them to even notice it.

Makes Sense, I will say no to the harness looking rough but it is older than 10 years.
