    Default 40 Fathom Grotto

Anyone have any idea why 40 Fathom is closed? Had a class scheduled for this weekend, the instructor checked the website and found that they are closed until Oct 1. The website and voicemail says it is because of TS Debby, but that doesn't sound like a reason to close until October.

Kevin, Something in the back of my brain is saying 40 Fathom takes a long time to clear after a flood whioch may be the reason for the extended closure. Someone with more experience with 40 Fathom can add to this.

I was there a few weeks ago to finish up my trimix. During the heavy rains, the surface started getting a little milky. Finally, on the next to last day, it was milky almost all the way down to 40-50 feet. On the last day it was inches of viz, and then they closed it.

    Sandy,

Interesting to hear, thank you. I hope to learn more as this thread progresses.

Hal says he sold FFG out-right to Ray. It's uncertain if there will be future public access.

There's a lot of infrastructure there to just let it sit. I wonder if they are going to continue leasing to the commercial dive school? For those of us not in the know, who is Ray?

I heard something about a rock and sand collapse on one side they're trying to get stabilized. Don't know details but was from a reliable source.

They are closed when the diving academy isn't going on.

Called them a day or so ago. Asked if they would open on Oct 1. I was told that it is very tannic with inches of visibility and may stay closed until Jan. The filters and pumps clear up the algae but not the tannin.
