    Default Ginnie Fauna

On my way past the jump to double domes today I spotted a crayfish on the sand dunes but it was not albino, it was dark green/black in color with tiny pincers and obvious eyes. I have never seen one of these in the cave before and was wondering if it is a stray from the river? On the way out I ventured into double domes and was shocked by the volume of river water there. Just a few feet above the line the vis went to river water zero...not the dome I am used to. The white room as of yesterday was clear of river water in it's upper reaches. Got a lot of rain today and it seemed like the cave vis decreased during the dive. Any thoughts on the crayfish would be appreciated. Bill

On a somewhat related note, the Sante Fe is rising daily and its out of the banks at Worthington Springs and the local park is flooded and shut down. Checking the river charts, it's all headed to Ginnie and beyond. Might not be as bad as the flood two months ago but the vis will take a hit for a while.

Yes, there is a Nat. Weather Svc. flood warning in effect for the "Santa Fe River at Fort White" tomorrow at 8am ET. It looks only to go to "minor stage" though.

    See the AHPS page.

Bill, I thought you were referring to the terrestrial fauna that is indigenous to Ginnie, such as the:

    Slackjawed budslurper
    feminus bankpooper
    large keystered tubesitter
    loudcalled noisemaking rednecius moron.

and other common species found there. Be careful, most of these are fur bearing, and require a permit to hunt them.

I saw a frog swimming in the wonder tunnel once. That area can be tannic from time to time and I have been told that there is definately river intrusion there. Possible in the double lines area?

I saw plenty of those on the weekend and on friday i was treated with a sighting of the mating ritual of the slackjawed budslurper and the feminus bankpooper.

Looked up the crayfish and i am pretty sure its a river crayfish that has ignored the warning signs and entered the cave environment untrained and unprepared. I am off to perform a rescue now.

And without a light, no doubt.

Now that you have mentioned "rescue" we are waiting to hear more about it.

Bill, this disturbs me greatly. The world could probably accept a feminus budslurper, but I do not believe it is ready for a slackjawed bankpooper. The next time you witness this type of behavior, I suggest squirting them with garden hose to break this up.
