    Default questions about old fatality

someone with a house on my street died in a cave while diving in 1979 - sept 1, i think. his initials were imh, 3rd.

where can i find out more? all i have are the very vague things i remember from when i was 9 & people didn't want to talk about it in front of the young'uns.

i don't think he was cave trained, i think he was found with at least some of his equipment off, and i'm pretty sure he died in florida but i don't know where.

    directions for further info??

    thanks.

Did you check the obit archives for your local newspaper? That would be a start.

really good idea, but they aren't online for that time frame. and the house on my street was a summer/weekend house - he actually lived about an hour from here. maybe i can try next time i'm there for something! thanks for the response, though.

I had similar questions about a family friend who died cave diving in the early 70s. I was too young at the time to process it as anything other than my grandpa coming over and telling my mom something that made her sad. When I started cave diving in the 90s, a couple different family members warned me "don't forget what happened to xxx", so I tried to find out what I could.

Anyway, I contacted the CDS accident chair, and he was able to look up the basics of what happened. It wasn't as detailed as would be ideal, but it was enough to allow me to have a constructive conversation with my folks about it.

    Good luck...
