    Default Spring rains-check river gauges

South Georgia since last Saturday has gotten over 7 inches of rain in spots, and I understand the Chipola will hit high levels. That translates to watch river guages because not only do I expect Madison to be blown, but other places including the Mill pond can be adversely effected.

I also noticed a tornado watch for the Live Oak area list night. Did anything actually happen?

I'm not sure where he works, but Tom Hundley posted this on his facebook. I know he lives in Lake City

"The weather played an early April Fools joke on work when a barn flew through the main power line feeding the plant I work at cutting power off to every piece of equipment I needed to do orders with. No a fun day.... At least as far as I know no one was injured in the tornado that I know of. It was too dark outside to see much though."

Choctawhatchee and Chipola Rivers and Holmes Creek are all at very high water levels. Most, if not all, of the caves will be blown. Even if they weren't it certainly wouldn't be the smartest idea to try to reach them a this point. Except for the guages on the South Choctawhatchee and Chipola, the waters have crested(Holmes Creek and northern guages on the Choct and Chipola)... atleast for now.

I dove 3 of the sites in the Mill Pond(JB, Twin, ShangriLa) last Sunday and they were all fine.

We have had everykind of warning you can get up here in Tifton,Georgia. Were under a flood warning now and its been raining all day and all night here.

Could someone explain how it works with caves getting blown out? Are the small river caves the ones most affected or does it effect everything like Peacock, LR and Ginnie? I assume high flow caves are less susceptible?

You have the right idea. A lot depends on conditions prior to the river going up. Any cave that had low on no flow would be the first to go. High current caves are among the last to be blown out.

Sadly, enough rise in a river can blow just about anything. A good example is Little river last spring. That cave usually has a pretty good flow, but the river went up very fast, and the cave reversed to become a first magnatude syphon.

Yes, Peacock can reverse, but we don't know if Devil's Eye ever has. You can't get to it, to find out in a really big flood. It has stayed open during all the minor floods, though. Same with Manatee.

Im sure i learned this in some class but i caint remember. What actually happens to make them reverse? The water Tabel?

Hydraulic pressures, or the differences in them...a cave's flow will be determined by hydraulic pressure which is controlled in part by the height of the water table. If you raise the river levels so that there is more hydraulic pressure from the water outside the cave, than from the water inside the cave, the cave will stop flowing and reverse. The speed of water flowing in to the cave is similarly controlled by the difference in hydraulic pressure.

FW-- Sure it is sad from the "I want to dive!" position, but doesn't flow reversal play an important role in recharging the aquifers?
