    Default History lost

A section of line was removed from a cave that was original survey line that had duct tape line markers, and distance indicators. This line was actually in good shape that last time I saw it. I am hoping this isn't souvenir hunting gone awry.

That's pretty pathetic. I'm guessing I know where you're talking about, and that cave is so massive that, while the line is old, it doesn't really need replacing. We recently dove there and that was one of the main attractions

I think at a minimum this section of line should be given to the Cave Diving Museum for preservation. This is cave diving history that is being lost along with the passing of cave explorers.

That cave is on private property IIRC, and you're supposed to talk to the landowner before visiting. Has anyone spoken to the landowner to see if the party who replaced it did it with good intentions? I mean it is in poor shape, so I can see where someone would replace it thinking they were doing everyone a favor.

We've had this happen in a lot of places in MX. It's really sad; one of the caves I've dived there was particularly exciting because of the original markers left on the line by the folks who explored there.

The museum has quite a few bits of line and markers from caves. I am hoping we can reopen next year. Right now everything is going into humidified storage and nothing is being lost.
Please, if you do take a line out, find interesting markers that need removed, (too many in any place can get dangerous) or a reel, please send it to me and the museum. www.overheadtimes.com
I just need a note on the system and the date, who sent it in and it will be added to the collection. We are a legal non profit and any donations of time, equipment or money will be tax deductible. Please think about the museum before you throw out or sell cheep anything cave diving related. I will pick up things if it's too big to mail or you don't want to be bothered. Yes, I'll clean your garage. Thanks, Cindy

Let's not start that topic again but you are right Lynne and if we can pin point the difference, here in Mexico we all know who is the culprit.

Really that line is not in bad shape along there. I have seen every square inch of that line with pulling tape and backward shots. If it was good intentions then carry the line to the cave diving museum to be preserved,if not, then it may be souvenir hunting.

The line is at Amigos, and would be awesome if someone would give that to Cindy. This is not a souvenir hunting situation, but with comments that I have heard and read, this is always a concern.

There are very few caves left that have original line, markers etc,and with time things need to replaced, but don't discard this because there is a home for these items.

So what section of line was removed? Was it just cut out and the tunnel left empty for the next dive team to fix or what? Was this part of a planned line repair? Was someone just getting a piece of old string to impress his buddies with or something?

    Cheers!!
