    Default Rule #6 - Changed!

Vote Over! Change Won out. Rule #6 has significantly changed as of today!

    .................................................. .............

Change is good... After some thought, the moderators agreed to a change to the infamous Rule #6.

Was: No personal opinions or endorsements (negative or positive) about other individuals, cave diving related businesses and organizations.

To: Comments about individuals, agencies, organizations and businesses will be removed if found to be inflammatory or cause the discussion to be uncivil.
Suggestions for wording change will be appreciated.

This is a major change. People can say a lot more about a lot of things. Negative postings can be posted... as long as one of us doesn't think it is inflammatory or uncivil... sounds like more work for the moderators... but they agree to try a change in rules...

The other rules still apply. Remember our 'preamble' and goal of this site is written atop the page...
The purpose of the Cave Diver's Forum is to provide a place on the internet for civil discussions of anything cavern or cave diving related.

I don't know if I should feel good or bad about my rather benign posting causing such a stir.
I agree with the change though and I for one will be on my best behavoir at all times unless of course OFG-1 aka "Ollie" tries anything funny or talks bad about my Mama. Then it will be ON GUARD!!

    Thanks MODs.

If this is a vote to change things, I personally like rule number six from Dick Culver's Shooting Page (CSP Forum.)

    6. You may not place an ad selling your wife, children, pets or vehicles. (Husbands Allowed). All firearms and related items are welcome. These boards are not intended to restrict items to just M1 Garands or service rifle items.

Their rule number three may be appropriate here.

    3. CSP reserves the right to refuse to publish anything that is inappropriate, and/or to "clear" the board.

I like the wording of the new rule.

I think Sludge & all the mod's do a great & thankless job (I know I don't have time to do it).

IMO I also think sludge should have just deleted the whole post at the git go, but he probably does too now.

I like the mods' evolved interpretations of rule #6 based upon precedence. I would interpret it as:

users have the right to post opinions or endorsements (negative or positive) about individuals/businesses/orgs. in context to a specific event or experience they've had first hand. inflammatory/uncivil remarks or trolling are excluded at the mods discretion.

    in other words:
the Divespasm 3000 Widget I purchased was a total piece of junk =ok
anyone who uses Divespasm products is an inept stupidhead =not ok

Hey, the percentages only add up to 99%!! I call election fraud! I demand a recount!

Anyway, while I understand the reason behind the current rule #6, and I agree that it helps keep the noise down, I think that applied literally it stifles the forum. I think that changing the rule is probably going to be a postive step.

This is my new, non petition inclusive, signature line.

I agree that being a little more liberal would be nice. However, I do think the moderators tried by creating the forum where we can post non cave diving things. SO, it's not like they haven't been thinking about it. What I would like to see is a seperate trial forum where people can express things more freely. My personal take is that people have to use their own names on it. If I know who desearves a good punch in the nose at least I can defend myself off the forum. Again guys and gals, you have no idea how badly hurt I have been on another forum, both by posts and personal emails. One email was so insane that if I posted the entire thing it would have hurt that persons reputation, and yes, they were a moderator on that forum.

So, while I think it's a good plan to try it I also know that rule 6 protects us from people we don't know and even moderators from abusing us. It's one thing I like about the posts here. Be aware that another cave diver is the target of your post, be aware another human being is the target of your post, be aware that we all disagree on things at times, we don't have to hate, be aware that someday you may need that person to help you or your cause. I actually think this is going to get more people kicked off the forum than less. Oh, and limit the length of all posts except mine! LOL

The moderators discussed that, and I think it might be a good way to see if the "new" rule #6 will work.

FWIW, we haven't actually changed the rule yet, so be careful

    EDIT: It is changed *now*

Why does it say "Mourning" in the title of the thread or it is just my Firefox sees it that way?
