Default Left hand or Right hand

I have been diving back mount for 10+ years and don?t remember if it was the way I was taught or just what I got in the habit of doing, but I typically put my canister light in my right hand.

In my SM training last week, my instructor told me to switch to my left hand. Main reason being that if I had to donate air I would blind them. Getting use to my left hand may have been the hardest part of the class :0. I am right handed and I did find running lines easier with it freed up.

    So what is your preference?

I typically run it on the right, but switch back and forth as needed.

My light is usually in my left hand, but it does spend some time on my helmet during tasks like reel work and note taking. I'm not sure I've ever dove with someone who usually keeps it in the right hand.

I?ve always carried my lights in my right hand. I?ve never had to donate air to anyone in 28 years. I?ve tried to use my left hand and it totally messed me up so I continue with my right hand

Been teaching cave and sidemount for over 30 years. Never heard such a statement! To answer your question, I use the right side. Makes no sense to switch sides based on a different gear configuration. One mans opinion only!!

So I do both. I actually am more comfortable with it in my right hand and feel I can signal better. But in general I ter to keep it on my left hand which I think is the standard most people are taught (but could be wrong). Prior to being dpv trained I always had it in the right Once I started diving dpv and ccr is when I began forcing myself to keep it on the left. Otherwise I find I become elss proficient when i have to use my left on the dpv or ccr. If you?re just swimming, I say do what you want but be wary that if you donate your ling hose you?ll be blinding your buddy.
After taking fundies, I?ve adopted gue?s can light/cord management strategies and really like them, which forces my light on my left hand too. In previous courses no one ever discussed tracing the cord to ensure you?re not entrapping the long hose.

You been diving 10 years, and have muscle memory for right, so do what is best for you. For the air sharing scenarios I have heard about, it has never been I appreciate my buddy saving me with air,but if his primary light was in "x" hand it would have gone better. Besides, in a real air sharing scenario, more likely rapid response that is automatic will occur, and have a feeling both hands will be involved, which includes your buddy, and you getting blinded will occur- fortunately this only lasts a couple seconds.

The DPV was the kicker for me to go to the left hand with my light. It was easier for me to mange the DPV with the right. Consequently, that left the left hand for the light.

I use the right hand for my light and dpv.
    I have no problem.
