    Director of Florida Geological Survey

    State of the Aquifer

    Bio: Jonathan D. Arthur, P.G. is the State Geologist of Florida and Director of the Florida Geological Survey, a division of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and recipient of the John T. Galey, Sr. Memorial Public Service Award from the American Institute of Professional Geologists, and the Governor’s Environmental Education Award (Florida). Dr. Arthur has served as president of the Association of American State Geologists and the Florida Association of Professional Geologists, and serves on the Florida Board of Professional Geologists and the Executive Committee of the American Geosciences Institute. He has given congressional briefings and testimony, including numerous invited presentations, keynotes and international workshops, and has served on four National Academy of Sciences committees related to aquifer dynamics and habitat conservation. Jon’s research interests include hydrogeochemistry and aquifer vulnerability, with special interest in geoscience policy, public engagement, and application of geoscience to address societal and environmental concerns. He received his BS with Honors and PhD from Florida State University.

    Today I will tell you about Derek Covington. You may have seen him around the dive sites of North Florida or may have visited his new Dive Medicine Clinic at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Derek is a great diver and is heavily involved in dive medicine research. I'm really looking forward to his presentation on pulmonary edema at the Conference, I hope you all can join me!

    Derek Covington, MD

    Immersion pulmonary edema, exposure suits, and diver deaths: Is there a connection tunnel?

    Bio: Derek Covington is a faculty anesthesiologist at the University of Florida (UF). As a board certified hyperbaricist, he also serves as the director of the Undersea Medicine clinic at UF. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Covington is an active researcher and explores the hemodynamic effects of immersion, exposure suits, and closed-circuit rebreathers (CCR). He is an avid CCR, technical, and cave diver. When not underwater, he enjoys spending time with his boa constrictor named Cuddles.

    FAY BAIRD
    SENIOR HYDROLOGIST

    Fay joined the District?s Water Resources Program in June 2018. Her current duties include compiling hydrologic data for the monthly Hydrologic Conditions Report presented to the District Governing Board. She also assists District program staff in retrieving and interpreting hydrologic data collected in-house and by other agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey.

    She has worked in numerous aspects of water resources since earning her Master of Science degree in Hydrology in 1984. Her 30 years of work experience in Florida include 5 years as a hydrologist at the St. Johns River Water Management District, as well as several environmental sciences consulting firms in north Florida.

    In her spare time she enjoys travelling to natural areas and historic landmarks, playing various odd musical instruments, walking, vegetable gardening, and being part of the community of Micanopy, Florida.

    Thomas Sawiki, Ph.D.

    Amphipod Diversity in the Floridian Aquifer

    Bio: Dr. Thomas Sawicki earned his Ph.D. in Ecological Sciences from Old Dominion University in 2004. Dr. Sawicki is currently an Assistant Professor of Biology at Florida A & M University. Dr. Sawicki?s research focuses on the molecular systematics of groundwater organisms, particularly amphipods and isopods. He is also interested in the anatomical and physiological adaptations that cave organisms evolve to survive in these unique habitats. In addition, he studies groundwater ecology, attempting to elucidate the trophic structure of groundwater systems.

    Frank McNamara

    Eagles Nest ? Beyond the Restriction


    Bio: Frank McNamara is an interest rates trader for Citigroup in New York. He originally got into diving while earning a B.S.B.A in Finance and Economics at the University of Miami, where the sport quickly developed into a passion. After a trip to Ginnie Springs, Frank became interested in cave diving, and he swiftly went down the rabbit-hole of earning multiple cave, mixed-gas, and CCR certifications.
    Frank is an active explorer in North Florida. Though he prefers to dive the most appropriate configuration for the job, his main focus has been on deep or long range projects requiring sidemount rebreathers or no-mount techniques. Frank has participated in exploration at Eagle?s Nest Sink, Jackson Blue Spring, Manatee Springs, and Lower Orange Grove among others.

    Very happy to see Fay Baird added as a speaker. She's a fellow Micanopy resident and we've known her for over two decades. Very knowledgeable and one heck of a musician!
