Dang, did they break into your car? Crime right near the freeway there has been increasing.

No, no break-in. I'd left it sitting outside my room on the pool (back) side of the motel while I rinsed my neoprene and hung it up. Forgot it, went back for it, gone.

    Sad.

I once wrote an article I called "almost honest," in which I described having left my wallet behind. I remembered soon and went back to get it, but it was gone. A couple days later all the cards and my driver's license arrived in the mail. The wallet itself and all the cash (quite a bit) was gone. The person who found it had my address and phone number, and I was close at hand, but he decided to mail me most of the contents but keep the wallet and cash as a reward for being "almost honest."

I suspect your thief considers himself or herself to be an honest person who would never dream of breaking into your home or car to take something. On the other hand, when fate puts such an opportunity in plain sight.... After all, I assume he or she believes, it is really your fault for being careless.

I guess the thief and I were brought up differently.

The lesson here, of course, is to never rinse your neoprene.

Sorry for your trouble, there are aresholes everywhere.

Just a strong or random thoughts about what sets this aside from other random thefts of this kind that happen all over the world on any given day.

    1. The person taking it would probably know what it is and its value--likely a diver.
    2. Given the location, likely a cave diver.
    3. Given the the size of the cave diving community, the person likely has visited CDF and may well be a member.
    4. If so, that person has likely read this thread.

Perhaps, but there are few if any cave divers staying at that Quality Inn, judging from the dress and appearance of those at the included/free breakfast. Many truck drivers on an overnight. I really don't want to think it was a cave diver.

I tend to agree. I suspect it was a kid that likes shiny toys. Did you try asking at the hotel office?
