Another theft

Last Thursday 4-21 I was clipping on stages at Jackson Blue when I saw 2 young 15-18? kids walking thru the parking lot. I kept an eye on them until they went over to the dock and dived in. Figured they were harmless and just wanted to swim. 2 hours later back at the picnic table I realize my shoes are missing, then my buddy notices his are missing also. He checks his truck and finds mine by his drivers door, but his are gone. After a few comments about why they took and then, left mine. I opened my tailgate to find my sunglasses are missing.

As much as I hate being a jerk (I know, you all think I like being one), it's reached the point where maybe when folks wander into Blue Springs Park, we should call the Sheriff's Office and report them as trespassers.

Several times I have delayed getting in the water until another group has gotten out of the water because there were folks hanging around that didn't belong there.

that isnt always the best idea. you start calling the sheriff and getting him to bust the locals for swimming where they have been for years and your just gonna piss them off. it will go from acouple punk kids every now and then taking something that you left out (which you almost deserve to get it stolen, lock your things up) to them being pissed at the cave divers and them vandalizing your car and worse things.

the morale of this post should be, STOP thinking the world is so innocent and lock your things up when you are diving. its not that hard. dont give someone the chance to steal your things.

Amen! When I was in the Navy, you could get written up for leaving your stuff out. The idea behind this being that you are creating a thief.

We have seen multiple sets of kids up there in the evening (we dive one night a week), and we have never had trouble with them... Some collect crawfish for dinner, some just come to swim... Talk to them, they are good people, and potential future cave divers.

Thanks goodness they didn't break into your vehicles and steal dive gear.

FWIW, best not to call the cops over petty theft. (unless there's been something more significant I don't know about). Because next thing you know they'll have to patrol and question everybody and then would rather no one dove there, etc. and ...well....because that would be their job. Just my 2 cents.

You would be surprised what some folks will steall, I had my nasty drawers stolen back while I was in the Army.

The SO seems to be primarily interested in taking in the money that cave diving brings them, but yeah not a good idea to make them work harder for it (they might argue for a price increase )

I guess that having your shoes stolen could be considered a theft but at least it wasn't any of your Dive gear. They weren't Ruby Slippers......Were they?
When I was in Orlando about 4 years ago I arrived at the Comfort Inn that is near the UCF campus. Because I'm concerned about theft I hauled my Tanks, Regs and Duffle bag up to the room but I left my Mask, Fins, Wetsuit, Etc and a Backpacker Guitar inside my locked vehicle figuring I would get them out after I get a Beer and a bite to eat. The parking lot was lit up like Wrigley Field so I figured it would be O.K. for an hour or so.
When I returned someone had pried open my rear window and stole everything inside. Their were handprints in Talc Powder on the Truck that came from either Kids or Midgets. The Sheriffs Deputy who responded said that they do that to hide fingerprints. She figured it was teenagers. I never did get the stuff back but I really didn't expect to.
Proof positive that a lock is only designed to keep honest people honest.
I figure if someone would do that in a well lit and busy Hotel in a "Good Part of Town" and get away with it then My vehicle parked out in the woods in Cave Country doesn't stand much of a chance without an armed guard.
