Default It's time to be proactive

Many of the news reports I've seen have been very negative and they mention calls for closure of Eagle's Nest. There has even been a petition started. Uninformed people are trying to cause problems for the cave diving community. It's time to speak up.

Is the nest still closed? Had a dive planned there for Sunday and that has been in the works for a month and have some tanks full of expensive gas....Proactive for me is to start diving there again soon. Bill

It is time to speak up,but we need to talk to the NSS-CDS leadership because they have already established a past history of talking to the people who control this site, and the community. If memory serves well the CDS is having a board meeting tonight which will allow people to have a chance to address the board and hear any plans to provide land owner relationship discussion.

I think we should be also raising awareness about shortage of pressure chambers that actually can treat patients. I guess this subject is more political so it is easier to put blame on innocent sinkhole than on bureaucratic and political a$$holes system that drives availability of our medical services down.

They are working on it. FWIW, the NSS-CDS don't know anything that hasn't been posted by the recovery divers.

Good point. DAN would be the best source of information about chambers, right?

Obviously this is a terrible accident and emotions are running high. Obviously the closure of Eagles nest is up to the land owners who might get pressure from society to close the site. I don't think I need to describe my stance on this issue posting this thread on this website.

The SCUBA industry as a whole has been somewhat a self regulating entity. There are no laws preventing one from SCUBA Diving in the US without any training...however the industry for the most part will not allow untrained individuals to dive, rent gear, fill tanks, etc. without proof of training. If policies and regulations are introduced to SCUBA I feel will have a negative impact on the industry as a whole.

Cave Diving is one of the worlds most dangerous recreational sports if not the most dangerous. I have been doing it for years now and any chance I have I am in the Florida Caves.

The question is what should our community do about this? Should Eagles Nest be Closed? Should Anyone who has a cell phone be banned from having a Drivers licence? We as a community have an obligation to get answers on why these tragedies happened and what can be done to prevent them. Could we possibly put different warning signs in caves such as this maybe mentioning TRIMIX only beyond this point. Just a thought.

It is time to be proactive...Cavers please be smart and safe on all your dives. Take every cave dive as serious as possible regardless of the system and follow the 3 rules of Cave Diving always.
