Current Problems is going to Shired Island for the very first time on October 24! Plastics are becoming more and more of a problem on coastal shorelines everywhere, and the Gulf coastal islands along the shore from Cedar Key northward are no exception. Consider joining us out there! We will start at 10:00 am and finish by 2:00. The work to be done is on the beach. You can come by power boat if you know the waters extremely well; or put in a kayak at the ramp on Shired and paddle down to the beach; or walk down the trail from the parking lot to the beach. We’ll start about 10:00 and end by 2:00 to take advantage of the high tides for those coming by boat. We’re hoping folks from Dixie, Levy, and Gilchrist counties will join us there, and maybe even a few from Gainesville.
LittlePinePilePlastic in the sea is quickly becoming more serious by the day. In March, Debbie Meeks, Larry Woodward from the Refuge, and two other volunteers decided to try a pilot project by conducting a cleanup on Little Pine Island. It went quite well, and we decided it was worth venturing on to Shired this fall, so we decided to include it in the Great Suwannee River Basin Cleanup this year.

Bring along bug repellent, water, and sun screen. No-see-ums could be a problem, so bug repellent is important. Wear appropriate clothes and shoes. Also be sure to bring along your lunch, too.

Please let me know if you think you will be joining us. Here’s your map link from Fanning Springs. http://tinyurl.com/o5yn7mn . Suwannee people will want to come up Dixie Mainline to Shired Island Road.
Apologies to those who got this e-mail more than once!
