Default Conditions expected Eagles Nest now through November 1

Any insight where we are now, or where we might be over the next 2 weeks?

I'm quitting my job in the morning. 😂😂

Visibility is typically bad over the winter. Usually better in the spring and summer. However, there is a lot of variation, so you can get lucky (or unlucky).

Interesting, we used to have best conditions around Oct to Nov,but a lot has changed in the area. I read reports of 50ft viz and people pleased with that,it used to be rountinely 100ft +.

It was 40' last weekend. Both upstream and downstream.

No naked pictures, just dive stuff. Click Here

We dove today, went downstream to the Lockwood tunnel. Viz as follows: basin maybe 30', better after the sun came up (we were early); ballroom 20' ish or so; got clearer as we progressed but the end of the Lockwood tunnel was no better than 40'. Worst I've seen that area.

A few years ago I wanted to see if I could figure it out, so I pulled all the visibility reports from Walter's site (caveatlas.com) and then tried to correlate them with various factors that might influence the visibility (rainfall over the previous 3 days and 2 weeks, state of the tide, surface temperature etc). The vis reports went back to the early 2000s. Obviously it was all subjective, but those data were/are the only thing available. I also included any visibility reports from here on CDF that I could find.

There was a great deal of scatter in the data, and conditions could change very rapidly from day to day (especially going from good to bad). There was no correlation between state of the tide and visibility, or rainfall and visibility. The only thing that did come out was that the reports of really good visibility almost all occurred in the spring and summer, and most of the reports of very bad visibility were in the winter. The Lockwood tunnel often had better visibility than the rest of the system. The observation that when the basin is clear the visibility in the cave is poor appeared to be true, especially in the late fall and winter.

Quite frequently visibility was always very good at Eagles Nest, prior to being closed in the later 90s, with some identifiable things causing degradation such as turn over and heavy rains. I have no had the desire to dive the place like I used to,and one of the biggest inhibiting factors was reports of 40-50ft viz. There are a lot of factors impacting conditions in the area with protracted drought, regional development etc. I am sure the underlying answer is there, just like why does Little River have such terrible viz, considering that it used to be air clear even in the face of high flow; but the fix,if possible, will be much more challenging. Thank you for sharing your information.
