    Talking Blood Summer !

"..forget the mosquitos. I was there last weekend, and very much in full force" KJ

It is interesting to find out where the biggest & baddest Skeeters co-habitate !

Minnesota may very well top the list of the worst in the country as far as blood thirsty mosquitos & deer flys go ! Especially the deer flys....they will drain your brain in no time. Seriously they are bad up there...ask Matt the Dreamer...he will tell you.
Alaskans claim the buggers have their own airstrips up there & are as big as a frog !
Mississipi, Missouri, Alabama, & Louiaina all claim to have the worst hoards of Mosquitos.
Inside the wooded parks and areas of Florida are breeding grounds for some of the worst bomber squads of Mosquitos in the country. Kelly is wise to vacate the parks for the summer, especially during flooding. That makes it even worse.
However, there are other site choices seemingly free of the blood sucking bugs: The deeper spring fed caves seem mild in comparison: ie Alachua sink, Devils Den, Ginnie, Little River, Jug ......etc. There are numerous sites i will not mention for they are hidden jewels & may need permission to dive.
Time of day you enter the site makes a difference as well:
ie: with a slight breeze during summer months, Little River is seemingly devoid of mosquitos. Go early in the day before it heats up. After 10:00am forget it. Late at nite is also a good time to dive. They seem to quell after midnight & is not nearly as bad, so long as you have a small breeze blowing in your favor. If it is hot, & muggy....forget it. You're better off to stay home and go swimming in your back yard pool.
Oh, don't forget the gators down here....they bite too !
    Cheers

Went to school in Duluth MN, they have a separate ATC for the mosquitoes.

Yup - lots of memories from canoe trips in northern Quebec & Labrador of waking up early in the morning before the wind comes up and thinking it was raining, only to realize that it was just thousands of mosquitoes, black flies, and deer flies pattering on the tent. Bug jackets, head nets, Green Ban repellent, and standing directly in the smoke of the campfire to eat so that you don't ingest a dozen bugs with every mouthful. Good times!

Looking for springs out in Chass, the only way to do it is in a thick wetsuit. I've not found anything else those bugs cannot bite through. They'll still nail your hands/neck, though.

Please do not litter. I am heavily armed.

I've seen videos of guys paddling in the NW Territories of Canada with their heads & bodies covered with mosquito netting & still get stung badly. One more reason to find other activites away from the great outdoors in our summer months. Peacock & surrounding sites are notorious during our hot summers. Anytime after October 10th & before May 1st are seemingly carefree days save for the wood ticks
in thickly wooded areas. Though both Ginnie & Little River are not nearly so bad if lite winds blow through.

Yup it is on ! ha
