Yes, I understand that they may have been caught. no one injuried. they got instructor/guides while doing a debrief. 3 instructos plus 5 cars robbed, which I think includes students

That sucks. On our first trip to Mx in December one of our first questions was about security issues we've read so much about and were told that most of the robbery at dive sites had died off. Hopefully there won't be a change in the trend. We'll be there in 3 weeks, and don't want to have to worry about it. On our last trip we chose to keep camera equipment at home, but plan to bring it this time.

Just make sure your theft insurance premiums are paid.

Report on Scubaboard said more than breaking into card. It said they shot the windows while divers were in the car and then robbed them at gunpoint. Not sure which version is accurate.

I don't think you're ever going to eliminate the risk of theft in Mexico. I recall reading an article stating average household income is under $1k/month, so a fancy DSLR camera could be as much as a year salary for someone living in Mexico.

If you bring camera equipment for the day, I would leave it clipped off inside the cave, even on non photo dives. Sites like Mayan Blue which are known for theft, pay someone $15 to watch your stuff while you dive, or rotate dive groups so someone's watching.

Most of the theft I've heard about in the area has been opportunistic theft and not violent.

It's a shame our CWP aren't recognized down there as that would solve some of these issues...

In all my trips to Mexico over the last 12 to 15 years the only Mexicans to steal from me were the Police once
