    Default Moving to Cave Country!

My husband has signed a contract with UNC-Pembroke! We'll be 6 hours or less from cave country! Finally, my dream of cave training/diving is going to come true! I never dreamed we would live this close to caves!
Anybody here live in that area? I haven't even been there yet, so excited!
What a change from living in the desert to being 1 hour from the ocean. Not to mention, the gardening there I'd so much better than in AZ. And, fox hunting! One hour from the oldest club in the US!
Man, I couldn't ask for anything more!

Hey, congrats! Maybe we'll get a chance to dive (we chatted a few times on other boards when I was in Tucson last year and talked about a side mount dive in Lake Pleasant). I'm not in NC, I'm in Tampa, but the diving is closer than in Arizona! And you've got wrecks up there in NC.

I'd like to find plenty of dive buddies. My husband will be pretty busy, especially his first few years, trying to make tenure. Would especially like to find some women in NC that would like to take some road trips together. They'll need to be tolerant of a newbie, though. I'm also trying to decide who to take my classes from. I'd like to take a Fundies class, first, even if I don't go the GUE route. I'm strongly considering sidemount because of my knees and neck problems. I may be facing knee replacements in a few years, possibly less, depending on how well my auto-stem cell transplants take.
Just recovering from stem cell surgery to both knees right now. I've been able to carry 50lb feed bags short distances, which is much better than pre-surgery, when in was stuck in a wheelchair or crutches all summer.

Very cool! Hope you're making the most of the close diving. I can't wait to enjoy those summer wreck dives. What a change from CA diving, at least the videos look amazing. What is the water temperature like off the coast? Hoping, even if I still need or want the drysuit, that it will be warmer than the CA water. I've become a serious warm water wimp with my aching knees. I've been wearing a 1ml wetsuit to swim laps in the heated, 80 degree pool!

Very nice Christmas gift. I know you and your husband have been waiting for the decision. Comgrats on the new job and welcome to North Carolina.

Thanks, Tony. Yes, it was a nice gift for. Christmas. My husband was really worried about getting a job. Not that many tenure track positions out there and a surprising number of PhD graduates in his field. Not to mention, always the worry of age being a discriminator.
Looking forward to meeting. Everyone, either for OW diving or when I start cave diving!

umm hate to say this but it's a 9hr drive to Marianna, FL. Where were you planning to cave dive? NFL? Or somewhere in Georgia?

I live by Fort Bragg, about 50min north of you.

When we moved here I also thought I was going to be close to the coast. But it's still 2hrs for me to Wilmington (on the coast).
In mid. November I dove for Megalodon teeth at Fossil Ledge. I wore my drysuit but it was 76F at 100ft depth. They told me it was going to be in the upper 60s.

We're going to have a Sunny 46F Christmas here

Gear can and should be perfect every time you arrive at a dive site. (Bill Gavin art.)

Hmm. I did the mapquest thing and it says 6 hours from Pembroke to Ginny Springs. Oh, well. I'm sure even 9 hours is more doable than the 2,000 miles or more than I a right now.
It looks like we're 60-90 minutes to the coast at Wilmington, depending on where we decide to buy property. I also have horses and foxhunt so a little closer to Southern Pines area, with the fox hunt would be nice. If I hunt 1-2x a week those miles with the horse trailer can add up.
My husband will be teaching some classes at Ft. Bragg and I'm looking into possibly working there. Any areas with inexpensive land around there? We are hoping to buy 20-40 acres somewhere.
76 degrees in the ocean in November?! Its in the 50s in California this time of year. Nice!!
My husband is a PADI instructor and I'm thinking about doing IDC, too.
