Default My gas testing procedure I follow

I have seen people test their gas and some depend on the shop's bank system. Curiosity of what is common.

I test oxygen because I have seen oxygen bottles come from the supplier filed with Helium. Test every gas you breathe.....period.

Anything I plan on breathing gets tested.

I test my gas as part of my gearing up process. I have two sets of doubles. If my plan is to do two dives in one day at the same place I test them both as I gear up for the first dive. If I am taking stages I analyze them at the same time I check my back gas. I analyze O2 only once, the first time I use it after a fill. If my usage is such that I can get several dives worth of O2 from the same fill I trust that the gas has not changed since I tested it earlier.

O2 bottle has permanent markings. Stage bottles get tape and sharpie markings. Back gas usually does not get any markings.

I don't dive helium, normal cave dives are not usually too deep or long and just Oxygen is needed as a deco gas. When I do use a stage it should contain the same gas as my back gas cylinders.

I don't own a ton of cylinders, two sets of doubles for back gas, two AL80's for stages, one LP45 for Oxygen, and one AL40 for emergency surface Oxygen. Fills in the back gas and stages are from the shops in North Florida so the mix does not vary more than a couple of points.

At 50 dives, I thought I had this diving thing figured out. At 100 dives, I realized how wrong I was at 50.

Let me know next time that happens, I have a set of doubles I'd happily pay to fill full of "o2"

Katie and I have a divesoft a quick stick and a CO tester with us where ever we are diving. If you ever need to use them just ask.

As well as 02 bottles filled with the incinerated residue of plastic seals from too-rapid filling, IIRC. (ps, smells like chlorine!)

Not only that, but an even more likely scenario is a mistake on the fill station, a lot of places requires a certain number of knobs to be closed/open to switch between O2/He/air/nitrox that can come out from a single whip, as much as we are meticulous on the filling process, it would be foolish to assume it's fail proof.

Hell, I analyse a costumer's tanks after I'm done filling it to ensure it has the correct mix prior to the tanks being picked up, why would you, the diver, not analyse it?

It is such a simple process, takes so little time, yet, it can have such a huge consequences, hard to comprehend someone justifying not to do.

WHY NOT TEST THE GAS YOU ARE ABOUT TO BREATH????
