Only the deepest in the Western Hemisphere, and a fleeting record at that, since other teams (in other caves) are trying to beat that record.. There are much deeper cave systems in Europe. Still an impressive feat!
The book by Bill Stone and Barbara Ende was one of my favorites, ever. Couldn't put it down. I knew what was going to happen but I was holding my breath at times ( I know, never hold your breath, ha ha!).
Loved it!
Squirrel Girl, I recognized your picture. You're an amazing woman!!

Aw, shucks.
Let's go diving!
Land of Enchantment -- not so great for cave diving, but mighty scenic!
Going in my pool while I'm grounded.
Or would that be stranded?

Wow! If I read the Daily Mail story correctly, they set the new depth record in Sump 9, the sump where Barbara and Bill stopped in 1994. Still no way found past that.
I'm a big fan of "Beyond The Deep", too. I can't imagine the feeling of remoteness there must be down at Sump 9, but the book gives me a sense of it. I've never been more than 5 or 6 hours from daylight in a cave, and that felt like plenty to me!
Some of the pictures from the book were amazing. I just wish there had been more. More pictures, Barbara?
My favorite seat of the pants story was when Barbara dropped the light in the rock. I think I stopped breathing for several minutes while reading that. Was Bill really that level headed or did he get a little bit upset about it?
