SE: My best friend back in the early 70's was probably Lewis Holtzendorf. Gosh, he was one of the best we had back in the early and mid-70s. Lewis made a mixed gas dive at Wakulla with Court Smith. They were diving heliox, and using the US Navy helium/oxygen tables which called for the use of pure O2 at 50 feet. We know now, that was assine, but back then they thought the profile was safe, and discussed it with one of the Navy people at the Experimental Dive Unit (EDU). As it turned out, Lewis convulsed and died. His partner almost did too. That was 1975.

I just read that interview. Man! If I have one regret in life it's never having had the chance to meet Sheck Exley... I was 13 years old when I read about his Mante dive and from that day on I new I would become a cave diver.

There were & are three heros in my cave diving adventures> Sheck was one of them.......>Wes is another & Forrest is still out there raving havoc amongst us ! If & when I get back into it, I still owe both FW & Sludge a dive or two. We'll see .
side note: Exley came into my service station with his wife some years
ago,
filled his vehicle with petrol, & then tried to run his credit card
thru my register ! I told him his credit card
wasn't any good in my store, & then smiled back at him. He
gave me a dirty look, & then I let him know I was messing with
him. I also remember the early days in Branford HS, where he
made numerous presentations. He is sorely missed.
