Default Little River June 27/28 2009

We (me and DonJ) had a great weekend in Little River (and a great dive in Cow Friday night!). The local wildlife was out in full force, enjoying the cool spring water.

After a late Friday night Cow dive, Don and I dragged ourselves up at the crack of mid-morning and met up with Drew and Jeff in Luraville. Neither Drew nor Jeff had had the pleasure of meeting my favorite, Little River, so off we went. I was disappointed that there were no buffaloes in the "buffalo pasture" along the way.

It was fairly empty and quiet when we arrived, and we enjoyed two great dives, acquainting the fellows with the gentle flow of LR (It was kicking quite nicely, lol!) The newly rediscovered memorial plaque is hard to miss.

Buc arrived in his fancy-schmancy rebreather, while Drew(AussieGuy) and Jeff headed off for fills and a visit to Peacock. Don, Buc, and I had another sweet dive into LR. By now, the basin was really filling up with swimmers and was staying pretty stirred. The viz inside the cave itself, while not as clear as I've seen it, wasn't TOO bad. Richard D was there with a student and wasn't too impressed with the viz for doing skills. I don't blame him for that one, but for us....it was good...good enough to miss a GIANT sturgeon sitting at the bottom of the chimney. Oops! Billy and Michael saw it, and of course wondered at our visual acuity...or maybe mental?

Sunday morning came on like an oven, and back we went to Little River. Don and I FINALLY saw the sturgeon, monster that it was! Poor guy...should've run a line. We also wondered what official decided to place a trash can in the cavern? It is well placed, standing straight up and off to the side, out of the way. It's well set, as well. We tried to move it and NADA. We ran into Stacey and Joanna, getting their Little River fix, as well.

It's Sunday afternoon, and the place is really rocking now! We both have a long drive home, so we do what any normal people would do....we go see Wayne for more fills and hit it again! Again, it was another great dive! We surfaced to the normal questions..."Are y'all divers? What'd you see? How deep is it? Is it dark? Are there sharks?" Man...that last trip(s) up the stairs for the weekend seemed LONG! I guess I looked sufficiently pitiful, so Don even kicked in a trip up the stairs with one of my tanks. One great reason to buddy dive!

    Here a couple of snapshots:

Don, showing me how many times I silted him out...

It was a great weekend, ran into LOTS of old friends....great seeing everyone!

    Hi Shirley:

It was good to see you at LR!

That dead sturgeon is now in the main tunnel at the bottom of the chimney (we dove there again today). It startled the heck out of me yesterday because it wasn't where I was told it would be! I think it would be hysterical to see that sturgeon coming out of the cave when all the locals are there

It was a lot quieter today except for the guy that talked to us for about two hours while we were trying to suit up, get in the water, and do our dive. And then the mom who told her kids it was too dangerous to be jumping off the bank and then said "wait, let me take your picture"

Nope, we jumped around and explored the front section a good bit, and didn't head back that way. But then...seen one giant dead and decomposing fish...seen plenty

    Don,

It was nice to meet and dive with you on Friday at Ginnie. Looks like you had a great weekend.
