Cop friend told me about this place, said when he first went there 5 years ago water was crystal clear. I went for the first time about 6 months ago and the water was blueish but not good vis. Went back today and the water just looked plain nasty. Been going back every couple months trying to find good conditions to dive it. It is within 20 minutes of downtown Gainesville.
The entire area looks roughly like this.
Two drainage culverts converge in this area where runoff has carved canyons in the ground. It terminates into the side of a wall in a small pool. On the other side of this wall is the larger sink entrance.
The main opening looks like mostly sand and clay with some limestone near the bottom. Biggest concern is stability, dont want to deal with collapse. You walk up the ledge about 20' and then look down into the main sink. There is a lot of construction debris in the area, apparently they tried to stop it up by dumping concrete slabs and other materials into the sink. This opening is about 25' wide and 15' across.
This view is standing on the ledge with your back to the bigger sink and facing where the drainage culverts converge. You can see some concrete from the first drainage culvert in the top left of the picture. The ruts cut in the ground by the other culvert are in the top right.
This is the smaller of the pools, with garbage and other muck floating in it. The water level appears to be the same as in the larger sink.
So has anyone dove this site and have any info about it? PM me info.
