True! I think I can live with that since I am working for cave gear here! Donations are accepted!!!

There is no limit. We'll always find a way to go deeper and deeper. That's been the pattern all along.

Allow me to bump a 7 year old thread... lol. I think I've found the vinyl stickers I'm going to put on my AL80s... "Poor College Student"

Still searching around in regards to diving sidemount AL80s. I've gotta imagine that even at sixths on nitrox, I'd still get a decent "little" dive in in shallower caves.

You can routinely get an hour to several hours on double 80s in mexico. The only issue you may have learning sm in 80s in prep for cave diving is your instructors familiarity with them. Many fl cave instructors rarely use them so some still recommend 4lb weights on the cambands. There is also a huge difference diving al80s vs steels in sm, so your later transition to steels may suck hard. Some people just dont get the differences in the two and have trouble setting up their gear when going from one to the other.

There is no reason you can't do all your cave training in al 80's. As Richard said if you are talking to an instructor and they recommend putting weights on the tanks run. You can get a harness and wing for al 80's that is cheap. Without a drysuit I think you may find that your dives are limited by getting cold vs. gas especially up in the north Fl. area where the water temp is 68 - 69 degrees. During the summer it is easier for me to handle it as you get hot being outside. I personally think people go over board buying equipment when they start. I did and I have learned from my mistakes but you see it all the time.

I was actually going to say those exact words, but didn't want to get hate mail.

If it weren't for shorter dive times in florida caves, I would dive 80s 100% of the time.

One other thing is you don't need a buttplate with door handles for al 80's. If someone tells you that you need it again run.

I happen to be selling a bc that will work great for aluminum 80s in sidemount My 2 cents, for short or shallow dives, go with LP50s. They cut down on the weight needed and hold almost 70 cu.ft. when cave filled. i usually clip al80s to the d-ring on the waist belt on my sms50 and use the rail for the 50s.

    It's a Hollis SMS50. I haven't put it on this site yet.
