    Default Going to Truk Lagoon

    Hey,

I've booked a Live Ab for Thanksgiving. Anyone been to Truk? Is a wreck reel needed for most dives? What type of line do I change out my cave line to? How tight can the spaces get? Is an HID advisable?

    Thanks,

    S.

PS - Hey Kev, RU reading the forum these days?

Just came back earlier this month. Spent a week on the Odyssey with my friends and our megs, excellent diving.

Don't need a line, all the engine rooms are easily navigated by sticking to the walkways and stairwells or have the guide show you, IMO a reel would not be a good idea. YMMV.

HID is nice but again, a hassle for transport. I took a 9 watt LED handheld from Salvo (and my LED b/u's) and had no problems, plenty of light for penetrating during the day and lots on night dives.

    Have fun, dive safe,

I am staying on the Oddessy - what was your experience like? Did you dive doubles? Did you do the San Francisco Maru?

Like I said, I took my meg CCR, there were 5 of us on CCR's the rest of the guys dove doubles, nitrox 30 is free, oxygen is $2 per cf (ouch!) but they pay a premium over there...

You are going to love diving with those guys, very nice crew and very accomodating.

Yes, we dove the San Fran (and a bunch of others), nice long dive on CCR....saw virtually the whole wreck (and remember it as well). For that dive if you are doing OC they set you up with something like 24% (assuming a 160-165 ft profile), I hit 185' but that's because I crawled inside. Deco was not too bad and if diving doubles you have tons of gas anyhow.

Enjoy it and say hi to JJ and the guys.

    Dive safe,

    Celia

I was with Celia on that trip but I was one of the OC crowd. I also dove the San Fran obviously with less bottom time than the breather bunch but shelled out for a deco bottle. The extra time to look around time versus the other OC divers is SO worth the extra cash! (50/50 mix cost about $17...I WAS too cheap to pay $2sq/ft for a 100%mix)

Boat and crew are great! Guarantee you'll have a blast!

I've dove most of the wrecks in Truk. IMO, the only one you need a line is if you go to the engine room on the Aikoku Maru - very winding and silty. However, the Odyssey won't dive that unless you've pre-arranged. Not a complaint there- I enjoyed my stay with them. It's just not their SOP.

Definitely take the HID. I dove doubles on all dives and had a deco bottle on many.

the Odyssey is a top notch operation. I have dived with them twice. Once on OC and the other on CCR. I took a couple of reels with me the first time, but didn't end up using them. As has been mentioned before, there is really no need for almost all of the dives, and the Odyssey actually discouraged anyone from using them while we were there.
