Question Boat ramp near Ginnie, please?

    Hi all,

Well I finally broke down and bought a 15' John boat. Can someone point me to the closest or most accessible boat ramp near ginnie springs? With all this talk about CCR cave cards and night time cops at ginnie, I'm just looking at my alternatives.

PS: A boat ramp that is not frequented by vandals and thieving prone individuals would be fantastic.

    Default boat ramp

Poe Springs is upstream of Ginnie and has a decent ramp. I don't remember if there are any shallow water issues from there to Ginnie. My kayak does it easily enough. Downstream there is a ramp at the 47 bridge. Usually inhabited by locals; I haven't had any trouble but my truck looks like a locals. The problem with the 47 ramp is the shoals just downstream of Ginnie. They will probably take the bottom out of your jon-boat and definately eat your prop.

Ginnie actually has a decent ramp; I don't know how long it would take them to catch on.

Mike, being that I'm the one who posted about the night time cops, I would say that it's only fair to give them a chance to have a staff meeting and clear up the confusion before we go buying john boats and posting all over the net about it. Yes, it was annoying being questioned, but life goes on, I'm not going to turn my back on Ginnie over one case of a misunderstanding, when 99.999% of the other times the staff has been courtious and helpful. When you've got 5000 drunks a day to deal with, and 85% of your staff is only there for the summer, it's a tad unrealistic to expect everything to go smoothly.

What would you think if a part time employee of yours made a mistake, and people started posting all over the net to boycot you? Doesn't seem fair to me. Give them a chance to make it right.

    James,

I should have probably phrased my question differently. I did not pick up a boat just because of Ginnie springs! I plan on using it on a zillion different sites, including shark toothing on the west coast. But since I now have a boat, I just wanted to know where to drop it in near Ginnie.

Like I said, I am looking at the alternatives.

We hit those shoals in my aluminum jon boat and 3 hp kicker.I was wondering what the flickering was up ahead. The people living there enjoyd it.My wife up front almost went for a dip.Had to wade out lifting the boat and pulling toward shore.

Rum has a boat ramp and is upstream of Ginnie. Drive past Ginnie on 340, take a right on 47, take a right on CR138....then follow the signs.... I recall a bumpy dirt road, so you might hav eto drive slowly, but it's a boat ramp...frequented by locals but I don't think theivery will be a big problem.

    Default Rum Island

I looked at that one years ago; it was overun by the local wildlife. I know Columbia Co. has been working to clean it up but it didn't look vastly different the last time I paddled by. If you can get there from Rum you can get there from Poe. Poe Springs is run by the YMCA and I have never heard of any issues leaving vehicles there.

Poe is further upstream but closer, roadwise, from Gainesville, I do believe, and it is a nice little park. Free with annual pass, right? (even for boat ramp users?)

I take it that Florida has public waterway laws?
