Thread: Cave diving BC

    Default Cave diving BC

I am going to begin cavern diving within the next few months and eventually become full-cave dive certified. I have a standard open-water style BC, but my research has led me to believe that I need a different style BC for cave diving. Any suggestions for some that will meet all of the needs of cavern-cave diving?

If you're going to full cave go ahead and get the plate/wing now.

The shoals are there still, the winds howl loud, the rain beats down, the waves burst strong. Some night, in the chill darkness, someone will make a mistake: The sea will show him no mercy. John T. Cunningham

Everyone should be using a U S Divers horsecollar BC such as this one.

Since you plan to take full cave, ask your instructor if you can take cavern and intro in doubles. It will be one less change/adjustment when you take apprentice/full.

For cavern you can use a jacket BC. I'd get all the other gear first, take the class, and then change BC's. "New" equiptment during the class sucks. If you're waiting on your class, I'd switch asap. I don't see myself ever going to a jacket after using a wing personally.

You also have the choice of conducting your training using a side mount configuration, with double cylinders mounted on your sides, rather than on your back. This has become a very popular configuration, both for exploration and for tour cave diving.

There are some instructors out there that prefer to teach all of their courses in this configuration. Just another choice for you to mull over before your first equipment purchase.
