Default Watch your car in cave country!

I just wanted to mention that my car was broken into today while parked at the Sante Fe River Park, where Hwy. 47 crosses the River. The window was smashed and some valuables taken, but fortunately the dive gear I had along was not touched. I only mention this on the CDF as a reminder that there is a criminal element in cave country that will go after your stuff when you park in an isolated area.

    Default Sometime not so isolated

I've seen it in places with quite a few folks around also. Snatch and run. One guy I met had his gear in the back of his truck with the following!

Sorry you lost your gear and had to get a window fixed. I hate thieves.

As cave divers do not have enough stress under water, add another burden... criminals.
I am sorry to hear about that.

I stop at this boat ramp frequently to assess the Santa Fe,and see a lot of nefarious activity going on,plus I've seen a Sheriff's car parked there on occasion, which suggests they are aware of the problem.

Graig, can you tell us what was taken? Were the stolen items out in plain view? I ask because when I used to dive Telford, I would leave my cell phone and wallet at the shop.

Obviously they would not know that until they broke in [which never happened to me] but I always worried about the phone and credit cards.

I've driven by the boat ramp you talked about and have seen a couple trucks with guys just hanging around lately. Last time I launched my boat from there, nobody around but when I returned the Sheriff was there talking to a couple guys in a truck. I don't know if I got lucky and it was a near miss or not.

It's bad luck to be superstitious.

The only thing taken was my briefcase, which contained 2 pairs of prescription glasses, a few books and assorted other non-valuables. I had my wallet, cell phone and camera with me, as I was walking not diving. I think your idea of leaving valuables somewhere safe is a good one. The Deputy that came out indicated that the location is one they patrol as much as possible.

Funny I think I have seen that dog

I do wonder diving at Cow at night. Never had any issue but it would be easy for someone with half a brain to wait until we are in the water.

This happened to us twice in Bonaire. Once it was the spare tire, the other night they siphoned the gas. With had left the truck unlocked with nothing in it. I'm sure they just waited for us to get in the water.

I live across the river and slightly upstream from that park. It does have a bad
reputation for illegal activity which includes vandalism and theft. Just look at all the busted
up solid concrete picnic tables. I never use that ramp to launch unless I plan on to bring the tow vehicle and trailer home. Instead I recommend the boat ramp at Hollingsworth Bluff which is just down river from the 47 bridge. Access is the paved road to the LEFT as you head north from the 47 bridge.,,,less than 1/2 mile away.

If you wade out in the water a little you can see my dock up river just around the bend.
Look for me sitting there using a bench rest for my SKS with scope.
