The interesting thing with profiling is that it often not only puts the potential suspect in a box, it also puts the entire investigation in a box mentality. Are we now looking for an 'introverted, compulsive, self proclaimed King?'. I bet if we would take 100 cave divers, we would find a fair number to fit those aspects of that profile. I have not seen the entire profile, but my guess is that it fits many people in the cave arena. It is a cave diver who did it.........

The meaning/intention of DIC is the key to this riddle. I would venture to say that the other words are subsequent markings either by the same person, or others. Why else would this be in one place only? Unless it is not.

The location of these is likely, but not exclusively linked to experience/accomplishment. Maybe DIC is a 'hero marking'? Like so many hero cookies/line markers. In this case DIC could be a pseudonym/acronym for a screen name or group on one of the boards....'look at me/us, DIC was/were here'. .... we could be looking at a certain level of cave diver who either reached their limit and marked. Or marked below their level of accomplishment......

Of course with all this public mention, a pseudonym/acronym would be wisely changed, so tracking through name changes in the main boards would be advised as well.

If DIC is related to a real life name/entity, then that person would be pretty stupid and by sheer luck has not been caught yet. If it is a pseudonym/acronym- public or not- it will be a bit more difficult to track this person(s)...........

As stated in my first response last week: "Am I at a dead end, no ... I've always said I like cave divers because among them are minds that seldom share a single viewpoint. They are active thinkers who come up with ideas."

You raise the exact issue why I have come to the community for help. What I gather objectively and assess objectively will always be affected by personal opinion. However if DIC is a "hero marking" why at a deco point in Devils? DIC is not a screen name nor have there (at least to the sites I've been) any internet hits on DIC as a user name.

An investigation is like pouring sand into a funnel or panning for gold, the tailings are left behind and the pertinent (ie. what filters through naturally) gets closer scrutiny. Focus is needed ... so are ideas. Thanks. /Ken

I looked closely at the clay bank last weekend. I don't see any way to remove the scars, without messing up the rest of the clay bank. It would be impossible to "smooth" out the clay, like you can do in a regular, flat, clay floor. Someone suggested removing a layer of clay, but what would you do with the layer you removed? Never mind how would you do it, without streaking the layers?

Just stare at the line as you pass by, instead of the clay bank.

I am with Ken, we should find these guys, and prosecute them!

I have mentioned this to others. A cheese slicer. Make a large cheese slicer frame out of wood or aluminum and string piano wire to close in the "C". Using this, you could cut out the lettering and distribute it on the floor for Mother Nature to take it's course. Just a thought. Ken

There has been alot of work on this, good job! At least around here 'tags' don't get alot of profile scrutiny. Law enforcement just documents graffiti, gets it cleaned it up, and keep records of the damage so that if a perpetrator is caught they have a long list of the costs associated with their tags. And then they bill them.

I caution against leaving these marks unrestored for long, as graffiti tends to attract more graffiti.

    What is beyond the range?

I know a diver that 40 years ago dove Peacock to Pothole on a steel 72. And he was not even a certified diver.

I don't see this working at all, only making it worse.

So I have this big sorta "C" shaped, maybe more of a long shallow "D" shaped thing with a wire closing the opening.

How long is it? Unless it's long enough to do the job in one cut, you are going to end up with rows. Even if you could make something long enough to make one pass, the finished/cut surface will look like a wave potato chip because...

How are you going to hold it steady and square? Your suspended in water, any resistance will push you away or pull you in depending on which way you are positioned I don't care how good you think your buoyancy is.

How are you going to pick up this layer of clay as it is cut? The wire is going to be somewhere around .030 dia. maybe double that, .060. As the cut clay comes off the back side of the wire it will just lay back right on top of what you just cut, you can't effectively get your fingers behind the wire and under this cut layer of clay...that is 8ft wide...while suspended in water.

It's bad luck to be superstitious.

I don't know! DIC seems to have made it to the Crypt ... and perhaps beyond the Hinkle by another account. If he checked into Cow, a full cave card and an Abe Davis or Wakulla to use the upstream. Most of the AD and Wakulla crowd know one another by now, yet no strangers were reported. There may be talk of a suspect vehicle but not enough information to go forward with that at this time. /Ken

Obviously the logistics are an issue. Obviously the clay bank will never be restored to it's original form. But to me what is more obvious is that we cannot allow this "DIC" to remain even at the risk of some additional yet minor (hopefully) cosmetic damage. Even if we smudge the formation at least it isn't graffiti. At least Mr. DIC doesn't get the satisfaction of leaving a permanent mark.
I've been thinking about this. If a diver was able to "securely" tie off a rope horozontally (to the left and right) across the formation and maybe 3-4 feet away from the damage, the repair diver should be able to either cut or brush away the graffiti while maintaining vertical bouyancy control and using this rope for horizontal stability. It might require a few set up dives but I believe this to be a workable solution among many imperfect options.
It would require patience, a steady hand, and practically flawless bouyancy control but is IMHO entirely possible.
This is just my input and I would in no way attempt this myself without the support and blessing of the local cave diving community. That being said......Let the brainstorming begin!!!

So in all likelihood DPV certified; it starts narrowing the field since Ginnie is pretty thorough about policing this.
