Why not just share gas with your buddy for a few minutes and move the good reg onto the tank with the broken reg?

Yes, that is an option, and I had thought about it if need be. But with the stage i was fine. One could potentially swap the regs solo if you can hold your breathe for a minutes time, or however long it takes you to unscrew one reg and screw it back into another tank.

Have you ever tried this? I did...while sitting on the sofa in my living room. With unlimited air supply and no stress, I could not consisitantly swap out a DIN reg on one breath. There is no way that I could do it underwater, under stress. For that reason I have an H valve on one of my sidemount bottle with a complete 1st/2nd stage...pressurized and turned off for the dive. I hopefully will never have to swap regs while holding my breath with this back up plan. And I will always have access to all the gas in both cylinders even if one of the regs has to be shut down.

Very good idea Lee. You could also breathe out of your BC for a few breaths while changing over your reg. A 50 pound wing has about a cubic foot of air in it while fully inflated (well, .8 depending on the calculation) which should give you a few minutes if you breathe back into the BC.

Andrew, it was nice meeting you Saturday at JB. I would have never guessed you had a reg failure during that dive when talking to you afterwards.

Quick question - what happened to make the swivel connection suddenly start leaking at that point? Was it just the movement of putting the reg in your mouth?

Glad to see you made it out with no further issues. From the title, I also thought there was a scooter failure, too!
