I was emailing Forrest the other day over sidemounting. *He* said it was *Lamar* who perfected sidemount diving and spread it around the world!

I maintain it was the *BRITS* who invented sidemounting!!!!! Forrest said, basically, "Yeah, but Lamar added the bungee and now the Brits call it American style sidemounting and because of bungees the rest of the world can sidemount.

Nobody does anything in a vacuum. But I still credit the Brits. Even if they didn't have bungees.

Forrest? Wanna jump in here and set the record straight??? :P

Come on now, can we really say that one individual perfected sidemounting???? A lot of names come up when you start talking about sidemount and who started it. I think there were several who contributed ideas and solutions to the configuration and procedures.

Oopsie. Did I leave out enough smilies when I posted? Like by my

I'm actually chuckling to myself when I'm reading and typing this thread. I can't tell if Andre was serious or not. Like I said, 'nobody does anything in a vacuum.'

LOL... No I wasn't trying to be sarcastic... I guess I really thought he was like the frist to use sidemount - well, I guess that shows how much I know about sidemount diving - which is pretty much nothing...

I didn't mean to make fun of you. Everyone seems to have their bits and things that strike their interest. Heck, I have no idea what Woody did wrt sidemount. Probably something cool since he's such a legendary diver. But I'll bet the Brits were diving sidemount before Woody started to dive.

Anyway, in my book, there's room for lots of people to make important contributions, even Lamar!

(PS - Today I dove my Dive Rite Nomad Sidemount rig with its bungees )

The Burgess book, "the cave divers" describes this rescue with Steve Gerrard as recuer. But maybe he is wrong, or is it possible there are two similar stories?

IMHO one of the first sidemount dives were done by Mike Boone a Brit (at the time) expat/Canadian .Circa 1962 Hardrawkin Pot ,Yorkshire.

Then again, IMHO the Brits invented organized cave diving as well.

I think a certain amount of reading about the history of cave diving world wide should be "highly encouraged" for prospective cave divers in training. It would be a shame if such a rich history would be lost over time. The cave diving museum should also be a must see type of thing as well.

    They both went

Steve Gerrard and John Orlowski were the rescue divers and the diver that was rescued was Gustavo Badillo. His dive buddy was Eduardo Wallis.
    Great story but rare outcome.

    from Steve Gerrards blog

    " DIVING WITH JOHN SULLIVAN

I had the honor and pleasure of teaching the NACD/PSAI Full Cave course for John Sullivan of Valley Village, California. John was staying at the new all-inclusive resort SIRINIS located two kilometers north of Akumal with his beautiful wife Kristin and his two young daughters. John is a Media Producer currently working on a film documentary titled SCIENCE & RELIGON. John is considering a future project documenting the underwater cave rescue of Gustavo Badillo in the mountains of western Venezuela performed by John Orlowski and myself."

There used to be I believe a IANTD article online about,I will see if I can dig it up.

One of the few rescues as opposed to recoveries and an amazing feat and reaction/response by the cave diving community!

In the Burgess book The Cave Divers, Chapter 22 describes the Venuzuelan rescue that's being discussed here, it was both Steve Gerrard and John Orlowski that were involved in the rescue. Orlowski was in the lead on the dive where he surfaced in the pocket to find the missing diver according to the Burgess book. Bill
