Edd has done a very good job developing a relationship with the county,and is a local tax payer too. It is good to speak directly to the source and see if a plan that can be developed that will result in a win-win scenario. Where we need to be cautious is we don't want to overwhelm the commission with questions/requests/demands like has occurred in the past,because cave divers have left a bad impression in the past in this county over issues. Perhaps it would be best to direct support to Edd.

Stacy was the one that mentioned to me a diving presence would be good. But yes, I agree that the presence needs to be civil and reserved... perhaps organized to a point where any comments/questions/etc goes through Edd at the public hearing since he's the most closely tied.

The presence should also be -informed-. They should be familiar with what is already on the books:

Civility is good, to a point.

I have not seen very many times where a local government has ever "relaxed" a law / ordinance that they actually put on the books. Thus if they overstep their legal bounds (as some of the ideas stated would be), then it is the right / duty for divers present to speak up and inform the council members that they are overstepping their bounds.

I have no thoughts that the diving community and the council members can come to terms with legal laws / ordinances so long as the county members have an equally open mind (which is not likely).

Hey! not true.. In my first official vote on a city ordinance as a City Councilman, I voted to change our law on beer sales hours- extending them by 2 hours each night... and with more than 1 person not happy about it.. however, we want to encourage tourism in our town and this was just one way to do it..

BTW. I didn't get out on the millpond to confirm, but Stacy mentioned that they moved the park buoy line to have Twin fall within it's bounds.

I was just there. The buoy line hasn't changed location. Twin is still outside of it. Shangri-la is inside the line.

To reply on the buoy change. That is what I was told by another diver.
I have been too busy to go on the pond myself to check.
If in fact it has not been moved then I owe an apology. I do know that it has been stated that the county wants to move the buoy line.
I think if any cave divers show up to the meeting it would be great, but keep in mind that people who do not dive in caves think that it is the most dangerous thing to do. A loud(so to speak) opinion from the cave community will push the non-divers( the comission) to the other side and not really understand why y'all dive in the caves. I hope it is all worked out and everyone is happy in the end!!!

Any update from the Jackson County public meeting held last Monday. I understand from the local news the park is going to be open on weekends past Labor Day--this may also affect cavediving if the current rules haven't changed.

You can now dive JB while the swimmers are in the park. We have our own parking lot and there are temporary steps in until the permanent steps can be completed. We will have picnic benches until the Peacock style benches are built. If you have any questions you can call me at 850-482-6016

This is great news. The new steps look great but another set will be constructed closer to the spring opening as Edd mentioned. I suspect we can still use the old pavillion when no one else is there.
