Cenote Calimba

I just received the latest copy of the UWS and I am extremely saddened. Two weeks after I left Akumal in December, Calimba collapsed upon itself at the hands of the landowner trying to make it more commercial. We weren't able to dive it in December as it was closed due to the landowner making improvements.

I am saddened, disgusted and shocked.

There is some good news, though. Last I heard, they cleaned up the collapse, and it is open again. It won't be the same, but it is still divable.

We can always get there by the Grand Cenote and a stage bottle.

We were there a couple of weeks ago, they have cleared the entrance.....it looks horrible.

I did the traverse without a stage. (Calimba to Grand) Set up and marked thirds the day before from Grand.
I was pretty glad to see the marker!!

Sad indeed. That was the first time I started a cave dive from anything closely resembling a dry cave/cavern.

I lived in that area for 5 years and Calimba was a secret dive. You were only taken there if you were good enough as it was so fragile, tiny and beautiful. Then the greed started and the guides were taking everybody, regardless of their expertise. 3 people were a crowd. Any more was just plain dumb. Yet I know of one group that had several-not all of them got out alive. Then the owner got greedy and wanted to open it to snorklers. The owners have no idea what is in there. Several of the cave entrances have been opened up for snorklers. more money. Yes, you can see day light but these are just open water divers and if light is a 10 minute swim away-you fill in the blanks. Glad I seen the beauty before it was "enhanced". I love the caves and hate to see their beauty spoiled.

We dove Calimba Thursday 8 March. There is a bed of silt in the pool and cavern. The first 100' or so is milky,more so on the exit, of course. It is very divable however. Very nice section of the system. Hated to come home! Todd Lovett took some very nice photos on the dive. Will see if he will post some here.

We were there last week. A couple of guys had mucked it up by continuing to remove debris from the bottom with shovels. From Gran Cenote, you could see the milky water towards the end of our dive.

The Cenote sure looks different. Where you had to stoop before, there is a giant hole to the air above......
