I have been told that the stiffness of the rubber material can have a HUGE impact on the price of these o-rings. I have a small leak, and was told that getting a $20 o-ring that was much softer than I use would probably do the trick. (BTW - the guy telling me this was not trying to sell the o-ring to me ; )
The "standard" durometer ratings for O-rings are 70 and 90. You can have darn near anything made up if you're buying enough of them, but the ones that I removed appear to be 70s. I'll see when I can compare against the new ones (they're due her in a day or two.)
I belive that 50's were being recommended for the task of fixing my leak.
50s are really quite soft and would be obvious if OEM spec on nothing more than feel. I don't believe what I have in my Teknas are 50s (main body O-ring) but will see what I've got once I get the replacements.
There's a ying and a yang to O-rings. They need pressure to seal, and up to the point they extrude softer works better. The problem you may be having though could be related to case deformation with pressure or a damaged sealing surface - neither is likely to be helped much by a softer O-ring..... however, it might be worth a try.
I'd probably try to isolate where its leaking first (use some kind of snooping substance in a pool - something like talc), submerge it, take it out, open 'er up and see if you can figure out where the water is coming in. Then inspect that area REAL closely, with magnification (10-30x should be plenty) If you can't figure out where its coming from then just inspect the entire sealing surface - both sides - and see if you can identify any problem areas.

I got mine in 70 dur. Silicone and had it there for 3 years no problems so far. You can get just about any oring that is made I think from this outfit.
Just send them the oring you would like to replace and they will match it up.
