Yes is is related. If you put the hook double ended bolt snap through the spool in one direction the spool can rotate so as to unhook itself from the clip. (To me the natural way to clip it is the way that causes it to do this.)

However if the double ended bolt snap is cliped to the spool with the open end/bolt facing the opposite direction it doesn't unclip itself when the spool is moved.

IIRC it has to do with the do with the clip slide button rotating around and contacting the outside face of the spool and sliding the bolt open to fall off. Facing the opposite direction the clip can't rotate so as to contact anything.

Another thing I don't like about spools is that thestring gets all twisted from manually wraping the string only the spool - but at least it can't get jammed.

I prefer spools. More compact and easier to carry.
Carry them clipped off inside a bellows pocket.
Because they are compact, it's easy to carry enough for all those circuits you want to do.
No moving parts, can't jam, what more could you ask for?

Just a side note about "new" spools in general (and reels). Most IMHO have way too much line on them, once the line swells up after being in the water they can become a handful. What I mean by that is the spool (or reel) is so full of line that the line wants to spill over the side/lip of the retaining wall and takes on a life of its own <G>. I have never bought a new reel or spool that I didn't strip off several feel of line and stuffed the excess in my tool box to use to tie bolt snaps to...back-up lites or whatever.

    Safe diving all,
    Mike

PS: I bought a river boat...got it wet today for the first time...and I dove a river cave today We will see who bites on this one. If you want a ride, you better be able to show me a cave I don't know about...which by the way will NOT be that hard Let's go diving!!!

It's bad luck to be superstitious.
