Forrest Wilson

Forrest Wilson passed away a couple days ago from medical reasons.



He was known and loved by many.

I can't write a good eulogy right now, but feel free to post a story or comment here or a link about him from another site.

RIP my friend!

I dove with Forrest at Madison Blue about 20 years ago. I was wearing LP104 doubles and when I took my first step down the stairs at Madison, I fell the entire way down, somersaulting the whole way. The only reason I survived was because I didn?t lose consciousness. I twisted my ankle pretty good too. We dove anyway.

We finished our dive and Forrest said, you know, your frog kick is kinda weak on the left side. Gee Forrest, I didn?t know. Maybe it was the 20 foot fall down the stairs?

The irony is, if anyone dove with Forrest, you understood the need for him to invent the line arrow.

Forrest was a good guy. He always came to my aid when I needed it, especially on this forum. He will be missed by many.

I remember doing several dives with Forrest. He was always willing to dive with Baffons like be when I finished Full Cave.

One memorial dive was at Telford when he was diving an HS Explorer in RGBM mode. We had 20 minutes of deco as it was our second dive (dive one was Cow). All he could do when we surfaced was keep apologizing for the deco. I kept laughing at him.

I missed our lunches (he lived about u miles from me)

To me the definition of the quintessential cave diver, is quantity of cave dives, laid line, and invented something for the sport. He checked all the boxes, but took a special interest in the direction cave diving went. He had a strong interest in dry caving, and it was fun catching up with him at NSS conventions. Good person, and will be missed a lot.

I can't count the number of times we had a social or other event and Forrest and I planned to make a dive together. But so many times he came over to me and apologized, saying there was a relatively new cave diver who asked him to make a dive with them. No big deal, I always said. That's the cost of being a celebrity!

Of course, Forrest always winced at being called a celebrity.

I dove with Forrest a number of times in Florida and Alabama. He took me to Petty John’s Cave teaching me about dry caving. We had some great lunches together talking about caving, diving, and work. He was a great guy who never hesitated to share his wealth of knowledge. He will be missed. RIP, my friend!
