Barry Burton, the former owner of Smoky Mountain Divers in Gray, TN, died in late December, age 77, from cirrhosis of the liver (Barry didn't drink): an ailment that, along with congestive heart failure, was diagnosed this past fall, too late for corrective action. According to his widow, Marilyn, Barry was one of the old time cave divers, having dived with Lamar Hires. I know very little about Barry's career-- he died before finally getting around to writing his memoirs, which he'd intended to do starting this fall-- but I knew him as a kind, gentle, and helpful soul. Other memories of Barry's time in cave diving would be interesting to hear.
