You are misunderstanding my post. I'm not intersted in any ONE persons achievement or the "farthest" penetration on 95's. I'm simply looking comparative information so I can see what the average is "baseline".Originally Posted by FW

But once you start looking around and poking your head in side tunnels... Breaking out a reel and checking out stuff without lines visible from the main line all that base line stuff goes out the window. What you need to know is your SAC rate. (resting and working) then you have info for gas planning. Also another thing that comes in handy is to know your feet per minute swimming rate. Since everyone insists on having arrows every 100 feet at least it can be used for something. That way when there are few markers you can judge your location based on time.

There's NO "average" penetration distance for diving Devil's Ear on over-pumped steel 95's because there are too many variables involved, such as how strong the outflow is, what physical shape a diver is in, how much cave diving experience in this type of cave system a diver has, etc..
Since you can make it to the 1100' distance arrow in the main tunnel, you might try doing certain dives within the 1/3 rule, such as The Big Room circuit(about 900' going up the main line and about 1100' coming out through The Big Room) - and - the swim up Hill 400 to the rubber bat in the Beetle Tunnel(about 1350' going in).
Concentrate on looking at what you're swimming through and don't put a priority on penetration distance. You'll find the dive more enjoyable and safer.

I turn usually about 1100 to 1400 feet, sometimes shorter, depends on a lot of factors. In a drysuit less penatration, in a wet suit more. But I'm starting to slow down and check out the side tunnels etc. Plus my new HID lets me see a whole lot more than my old 35 watt halogen light.

Thanks all. It looks like we are right where we need to be given a new system. I'll start another thread on what different pull and glide techniques people find work for them.

The technique isn't as important as your position in a high current tunnel. You will find out that the amount of current is different from one side of the tunnel to another. If you can "read" the tunnel, you will do better. It is much like kayaks do in a river.
In general, the current will be lower on the inside of a turn, because you are "shielded" by the cave wall. The best path is to move from one side of the tunnel to the other, staying in the lowest current. Once you get around a turn, move to the opposite wall, behind the next protective turn.
