I reccomend you launch your boat(s) at Big Oak Trail head. There is a nice concrete launch there and I've never had a problem with day parking there. It's a very short trip upstream but doable in a canoe or kayak. Motor needed for anything else. The site is on your right with a rope swing present. You'll pass 5 holes on your left.

I doubt it's divable today though. Falmouth, upstream, was reversed 2 weeks ago.

River diving requires Diversdown flag. Cavers been fined for missing that stupid thing before. River caves suck, poor viz and lots of work per ft of line penetration. Also it is good idea if at least one person knows where you going that day.

There are lots of places around the world where the locals are hostile towards divers. Some have been known for stealing diver gear, slashing tires, and even bombarding divers in the water with bricks. I find it's best not to announce presence in such places by displaying a dive flag, bumper stickers, etc even if that puts you at odds with regulations. The only time it makes sense to fly a dive flag is when you are diving a spot with boat traffic or other hazards where people respect it.

Not sure how the locals around the FL rivers react to divers in boats. Also not sure if they perceive people in boats near dusk or dark as threat. My worry would be that most everyone has a gun and some are trigger-happy (shoot first, talk later).

We'll be complete noobs and need to know all the basics

Start with a boater safety coarse, even small boats have the potential to get you or another person hurt. This will also help you get some familiarity with what to expect (for the most part) from other boat traffic.

Second to that, balance the load withing the boat. Don't put everyone and everything at the bow or stern and finally be mindful of your speed and be ready to avoid in water obstacles that you may not be expecting.

Fellow boaters are usually not a problem,but the bigger risk is boat ramps. I spent an extensive amount of time on the Suwannee, Santa Fe, Withlacoochee, Chipola and Flint cave diving, and the worst I encountered was some locals drinking a bottle of Lord Calvert to stay warm in the spring water. Boaters traveling fast and generating a large wake is the biggest issue when you have two people and all their gear about to take a rogue wave on the port side.

Just to put things into perspective in North Florida. As an ER/Trauma Nurse I once took care of a patient who shot himself while he was fishing. And yes alcohol had a role to play.
