Why posting is good

Ok, so this comes up frequently online and offline I'd like to point out why it's a net positive when people post stuff.

One of the issues in tech and cave diving is IMHO that people tend to live just within their little group or clique or whatever you wanna call it. These groups (which most of us are in some group) often form around a instructor or shop. They're often either all fans of a certain brand or agency (specifically GUE comes to mind) or a configuration (like the super annoying the sidemount fan boys).

Now, in all these groups, there seem to have some accepted truths... which are more or less BS and when you asked people for their resoning, you can't get an answer because they have just accepted what they wer told by the "best" instructor ever.

I think this applies mostly to newer divers that haven't been around for more than 3 - 5 years. People seem to get more open as they in it form longer.

Getting back to posting. When people outside of you're little group post stuff it at least gives you an opportunity to hear something from a different angle. That's good. You might not take advantage of that opportunity, but it's still a good thing to have.

For that reason alone IMHO, posting is good for the sport of tech and cave diving. If some people are too lazy to think about other view points and try to follow peoples reasoning, they should just stay within their little group.

The term “group think” comes to mind. I recall it being discussed around the time a diver passed away while trying to set a depth record.

Yeah, Doc Deep. That's actually a pretty good example. Had he talked to some people outside of his little local group and taken other people's opinion seriously, he probably would still be around.

I wish there was more posting but I think the world has moved to Facebook groups. Half the time I go to write a lengthy response to something I end up deleting my response before I even post it for fear that it's going to piss someone off (unintentionally) or I'm going to berated in public for *gasp* not knowing the answer to something. I feel like people used to be more willing to debate and exchange ideas. Most people don't post now for fear of ridicule these days.

Everyone knows fastest way to find out if you're wrong is to post something on the Internet that somebody disagrees with or alternatively post the wrong answer and somebody will come along and angrily and smugly correct your wrong "opinion."
