Default Anyone diving out of a 2 door Wrangler?

Anyone using a 2 door Wrangler as a daily driver/weekend diver? A new vehicle is in my future, I?ve been offered a 2-door Wrangler if I pay to get it to me (about $4k). I?m debating whether to do that, or to put that same money down on a bigger SUV or small truck.

It?s a small island, so long hauls/interstate travel is not a concern?longest drive is maybe an hour. I typically haul ccr, scooter, 2xbailouts, plus everything else (suit, fins, save a dive, etc.). Anyone doing this have advice?

Anyone regularly using one for diving?

Wrangler will easily haul a small trailer. Harbor Freight has trailer frames from 4x4 to 4x12. Buy and build trailer frame for under $300, and build a box body on the trailer. Beat's paying 4 digits to Wells Cargo for something you're going to beat the @#$% out of anyway?

This was my Toyota Prius towing a Harbor Freight trailer with a home made stake bed body AND locking cover down to Oshkosh Airshow.

Went for the trailer, stayed for the Martin Mars. Wrote my master?s thesis on a flying boat.

I agree with the trailer idea, except I?m on a 15 mile-long island. Trailer?s a bit overkill for a 20 minute drive to the dive site.

FWIW, I?ve done OC tech diving out of a beetle and a prius, so I know it CAN be done. Just trying to get some feedback from those who do it.

What year? I assume its a YJ or TJ for the price. Pull the back seat out and you have a good amount of room back there. I hauled 2 peoples tech gear in one back back when I owned a TJ. Rip out the carpet if its still in there and bed line it. Great choice IMO.

2010 or 2011 (JK?). It was my dad?s, thus the price (free, but I gotta get it out here to me).

Thanks for the info, and ideas.

I just switched to a jku, I haven't taken it diving yet but there are many options for shelf in the back. Hanging, tilt up, etc, range of heights and sizes. And you can put in a sliding floor, or security box. I imagine I will put a shelf, and in my dreams I will have a sliding shelf in the bottom, but that's a ways off. I don't foresee any issues fitting gear in it, I will make better use of vertical space than I could in rav4, which makes up for slightly smaller footprint.

I love the diving community, motorcycle community, and have found that there is similar jeep community, including huge divisions such as the angry eyes grill which most say turns it from a Jeep to a Heep, just like the sidemount vs backmount arguments.

I can already tell it's going to use way more gas and break down more often than my toyota, but I decided I'm ok with it. For 4k you would be crazy to not buy it!

They brought the Mars to Oshkosh in 2016. No landing gear, water only. So it had to stay at the Seaplane Base on Lake Winnebago (where I work in the Ops Shack).

They were trying to find a buyer for the Mars, because it was operating in the red. But no buyers.

In 2017 it took hull damage from a rough water landing, and I understand that it was retired and never repaired.

The Martin Mars design was meant to compete head-to-head with Hughes Spruce Goose for heavy trans-pacific equipment lift for invasion of Japan. Never happened because of A-bomb, and only 7 Martin Mars were built. I do not know of any left in flying condition. Was a real treat to see the Mars in action. They did rides, fly overs and a couple of water bombing runs.

I have a JK unlimited (4 door), but a 2 door should still have room for dive gear.

I have a 1997 Tj as a daily driver. I can carry two scooters, about 6 tanks , gear for two and a passenger.

    Default You did what?

A buddy of mine turned a two door Jeep into a a very utilitarian adventure machine. He ripped out the carpet, and the back seats. He then drilled through the base of the Jeep and installed two boat plugs, at the lower points. He built in standardized attachment points for dive gear, and other shelving as storage options. We could get two peoples worth of tec gear and a cooler full of snacks and beer in there. More than once when the interior was full of dirt and mud from adventuring I saw him pull the front seats out, cover the dash and electronics with a tarp, pull the boat plugs and basically hose out the interior of the Jeep! Genius.
