The "sports equipment" rider is needed (in my case) because there is a limit to the "off premises" claims that can be made. The sports equipment rider allows me to take (in my case) $25,000 of equipment on the road, and be fully covered. Depending on your insurance company, your personal possessions outside your home may be limited to only a couple thousand $$$. Depends on your state and insurer. When I drive on dive trips, it's not just the scuba equipment, it's also cameras. laptops (me & mrs), and the contents in our travel trailer down to our cat's litter box.

I had three musical instruments (worth around $14,000 total) stolen in 2001. State Farm wrote me a check.

When one makes an insurance claim, can't they raise your rates or just decide to drop you after they have paid?

We had a guy burn his house to the ground twice in 5 years. I really really wished we'd drop him, but we didn't.

Depends on the company. They can do whatever they want within the limits of the contract. But, even if they raised your rate $100/year (like with my total loss in 2017) it would still be worth it. It was $30k in loss. It'll take a long time to offset the increase. And we in the insurance world know they'll never make it back on you. But it's a game of large numbers.

FYI, you guys get screwed on cameras, computers and musical equipment. No doubt about that.
